Good pistols made in USA???

#1

Post by Rockrz »

OK, so I'm still needing to get a good pistol and I'm not that familiar with all the brands out there.

I was always more of a deer hunter and only got to shoot other people's pistols
occasionally when they were having taget practice down at the deer lease.

So, what makes are from the good 'ol USA?
And, which one of those are considered to be superior quality

I'm flexible in that I like revolvers (less likely to jam?)
but I also like the idea of semi-automatics as well.

"Les Baer" makes a very good variety of 1911 variations. "Ed Brown" pistols are also excellent, but carry about a $500 - $700 price premium that IMHO isn't justified. "Wilson Combat" pistols are good, but priced as if they were great. Some of the S&W auto pistols are pretty decent, but aside from their M41 rimfire, most don't fit my hand at all. Ruger pistols are functional, but generally plug-ugly with poor "pointability." (That's a subjective judgement - they generally function well enough.)

U.S. made pistols or pistols made in the U.S. by U.S. firms? If the former then SIG, Beretta, and Glock are made in the U.S. If you are looking for a U.S. company that makes pistols then the list includes --- Colt, S&W, Ruger, Kahr, Auto Ordnance , Kimber, STI, Wilson Combat, Les Baer, Rock River, and some others.

I like the S&W M&P and Smith and Wesson makes a top notch 1911 and some of the best revolvers in the world. If you want to spend your money at home there are several options.

If you are new to carry, the Ruger LCP is a great little gun. I added the ArmaLaser to it because it is a point and shoot gun. The sites are minimal...because I can't think of a word less than minimal that doesn't imply that they are non-existant.
I also have a Ruger p-90 .45 cal beside the bed. Extremely reliable.
My real recommedation....go to pawn stores and look...go to gun shows and hold it...go to the sporting good section and ASK...if the person is at the gun counter, there is a really good chance that they are pro-gun. Admit that you are new and you just made 5 new best friends that will probably drive you to the range that afternoon to sample "their" choices.
Gun folks and camping folks are really some of the best folks I have ever met. MOST motorcycle folks are in there too, but after a $73, 000 intorduction into BANDITOS (popped my ACL as I was shoving his friend away from my wife - they Sheriff was nice enough to keep his gun on him as I was a bit ... preoccupied...although he didn't move for the 2 minutes that it took for the Sheriff to get there.)
You will find what works for you. Look for it. Try when you can and trade up. The Ruger LCP is the very FIRST time I have ever bought a new gun.

Good luck and welcome to the club...smile and know that you are smarter than "THEM FOLKS :->)

I was about to reply with the Springfield Armory XD line, but after further research discovered they were made in Croatia. :eek6

U.S. made by U.S. owned companies. Well there's Colt(revolvers & semi-autos-some of the best), S&W(arguably the best revolvers in the world..they make semi-autos but many recalls), Ruger(very good BIG revolvers in BIG calibers, great affordable automatics) - I have a P-95 semi-auto in 9mm..I'd trust it in a heart beat...digests every type of ammo I've put down the tube. Their semi-autos most affordable of them all. Made in Prescott, AZ.

I don't know much about the 1911 clones(Kimber, Les Bauer and others) but for the price their asking I'd have to assume they are top of the line products.

A good choice to keep your money in the U.S.A. after you've purchased a pistol. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I guess I do need to go at least handle some of these brand/models
and see if they feel right and if they do I could always see if there is a shooting range around
that might have what I'm interested in so I could go shoot a few rounds before buying.

I didn't realize that some of the brands made in other countries were actually being
produced by an American company that just has their factory over there.

I do kinda like the idea of buying something made with good 'ol America labor
so maybe S&W might be the way to go.

If you should decide on a 1911 style handgun, you should consider STI in your top choices. They are very well made with everything from a very nice entry level handgun (The Spartan) to tricked out beauties. They also come in a varieties of sizes to fit your shooting and carry needs.

The best part is that not only are they made in the USA, they are made right here in Texas. Georgetown to be specific.

Some of the STI pistols are made in the Philippines by Armscor.
