LCP - almost!!!

Came close to a Ruger LCP this weekend at Pasadena.

I walked in early Saturday and immediately went straight to AJC and Schramm's to look for any LCP's.

AJC had none and Schramm's was still wanting $399, down from their ridiculous $419 at the previous show.

I went about walking through the rest of the show until I saw one sitting on a table marked $295. I got to pick it up and fondle it briefly before the dealer snatched it from my hands. Seems there was a customer already filling out his 4473.

So don't give up hope for finding one at a price that is at least reasonable, if not cheap.

I went to the gun show up here in Fort Worth this weekend. I've bought 5 guns from AJC as they simply have the best prices. Well, Alan was talking to a customer who was buying a gun and the customer asked him about the LCP, and Alan said he hasn't been able to get many. He did ask the customer to give him his name and phone number and next time he got one in he would sell it to him. Best of all he quoted him $240 on the spot for the LCP. I like AJC, they are a great dealer to work with. In fact, I bought another gun from him this weekend.


I did some more walking around the show and I did see one dealer that had an LCP, and he wanted $349. I did pick it up, and quite honestly I don't see what the deal is. Yes they are tiny, but they just feel like a toy to me. I'm not saying they are a bad gun, but they seem more novelty than practical. Yes, they are small but how small is small enough? It seems to me that once you get down to a certain size, then going smaller doesn't buy you much. If we all agree that the S&W J-Frame revolvers are easily pocket carry-able, what benefits do I get by going even smaller than that?

At the last Pasadena show prior to this, Alan was selling the LCP for $335. I've been told the dealer cost is around $220.

Well, in Alan's defense, in the last show before this one, everyone I saw that had it wanted $400+ for it, so Alan's $335 was still probably much lower than the rest.

Certain segments of the handgun buying public are extremely sensitive to the size and weight of the handguns they buy. They are image-conscious and expect their handguns to fit seamlessly into their lifestyle without having to make any adjustment. They are not interested in joining the "gun culture" or changing their mode of exercise, wardrobe, habits, etc, to accommodate concealed carry and the possibility of a fight which may never come. For these individuals, 2.6 ounces and a half inch can mean a lot. Furthermore, revolvers are frequently perceived by these individuals as "old-fashioned" or otherwise unappealing. In the interest of sales, certain manufacturers are willing to cater to this demographic.

At bad-breath distances, the smaller handgun might be more difficult for an attacker to grab. That is the only practical benefit I can conceive for these mouseguns, aside from the claim that they are easy and comfortable to carry (which I have no reason to doubt).

That depends on your pockets and other factors. I don't agree that a J frame is easily pocket carry-able in ALL my pockets, while the LCP is. I've carried my LCP in a jeans pocket that would be impractical to carry a J-frame. The flatness of the LCP is what is important there, as well as length and width. The LCP wins over a J frame in each of these measurements. The LCP is also 6+1, as opposed to the 5 of a J frame. An extra mag is considerably more compact to carry than a speed loader. The LCP is 59% the weight of a typical J-frame. The difference in MSRP between the two is $231.

So the deal is that it is a small, light, inexpensive pistol with a carrying capacity of 7 rounds. So far, it seems to be more much more consistent and reliable that its competition, the Kel-Tec P3AT.

Basic economics...in an oligopoly as the supply decreases to the point of which limits the number of competitors the price increases greatly.

I would look at Academy Sports and Outdoors for $295. I went there one day and got lucky. Apparently other locations also had one so they might not be a bad place to look.

We had a new member here read about the LCP, decided that he wanted one, went to Academy and bought one, and six hours later had given us a range report. He had no idea that they were scarce. Some folks have al the luck.

I've called all of the Academys within reasonable driving distance to hear reports of "we've only had two all year" and "we have no idea if we'll get any". A person would have to call at least three times a week since I'm told they get deliveries then.

When I called last, I was told that their distribution center had four. I asked if I could prepay one and was told that they were not available.

Anyone who finds one at Academy should go straight to a store and buy a lottery ticket.

You guys need to stay on top of Cabela's. My dad walked in after a gun show killing time. He saw none in the case but asked a clerk who went into the back. He came back with on in his hand saying that a lady had returned for her husband. It was unfired but missing the soft case and instruction manual so they wanted 249 for it. He said SOLD! and was filling out papers.

No joke, as he started putting pen to paper, 3 seperate guys trickled in right after asking if they had any! Talk about timing. Then he was nice enough to trade me for my Bersa 380 Thunder CC and wait till he found another LCP for himself. A month later, he came to San Marcos for my sister's orientation and stopped in the Cabela's down here. He asked and they said they had none, they then called the one in Ft. Worth and they had one....again! He told em to hold, they did, drove up and walked out with it that night.

Funny part is there is 10,000 gun difference in our serial numbers Can't say they aren't crankin' them out! So keep up guys, they are out there.

You should try going to Academy and asking to be put on thier waiting list. I did that about a month ago (they offered to add me to the list when i went in asking if they had any LCP's) and they called about two weeks later and saying they had one for me. Took me two days or so to go in and pick it up. No money up front, just a hand written list on a small piece of note paper. I was maybe number 4 or 5 on the list and really did not think i would ever hear from them. The guy thanked me for coming in saying that Sugar Land had been calling like every hour wanting the LCP they had. I think the price was $298.00. Good job Academy!! -John
