Tote 9: Do you happen to have a reference for this quote? I've seen it off and on for a year or two, but have not been able to find anything that verifies that Jefferson actually wrote that, and and I'm beginning to doubt that he did. It certainly doesn't "sound" much like him.Tote 9 wrote: "Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not."

The problem is the antis use our own inaccuracies against us. Quaint taglines and false attributions make us feel good amongst our own, but tend to backfire when used in a debate. Just because we wished someone said something doesn't mean he did.

I cannot say for certain that Jefferson made that qoute, but I amjwp wrote:Tote 9: Do you happen to have a reference for this quote? certain he made these.
No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... such laws serve rather to encourage than to prevent homocides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

My favorite is probably number nine:
And my second favorite is number nineteen:9. Those who trade liberty for security have neither.
Two enduring truths that too many people living comfortable lives, desperately seeking guarantees of safety in the pipe dream of a world without risk simply don't seem to be able to grasp.19. Criminals love gun control; it makes their jobs safer.
