My CHL is current DPD officer. supervisory level- his comment for immediate first responder comment is: " I was in fear of my life and I want to talk with my attorney- period- repeat as often as necessary."
If the officer states, "well, if you are telling the truth- you have nothing to worry about."
Just remind the officer who said that ....that they are also the ones who will refuse to make a comment without the union rep and legal consel right next to them in similar situations! Unquote

What's funny is that I say that is the answer that should be given b/c that's what I was taught when I worked in LE. Yet so many tell me that is not what cops want to hear. I say who cares what they want to hear. The facts are the facts. It's not what they feel , it's what you can proove.

I've attended two of John Farnam's defensive shooting classes ( http://www.defense-training.com/ ); as well as being an instructor, he is an LEO also. He spends quite a bit of class time talking about how one should act before and after shooting in self-defense, and for the "after" part his advice basically tracks with what many posted above: "That man tried to murder me. I'll be happy to explain everything as soon as I talk with my lawyer." Then call a lawyer -- any lawyer ("you can fire him tomorrow and probably should") but get ahold of one-- and keep your mouth shut, other than to repeat the above phrase as necessary. Your lawyer can talk to the police and the DA about the situation, and nothing he says can be held against you ("Look, my client is a father, CHL holder, no criminal record, his opponent has a long history with the law, clearly self-defense", yada yada. Anything you say can be used. E.g. You happen to say "Darn, I really didn't want to shoot that guy" meaning it's a shame you had to take a life to defend yourself. However, you find the prosecutor has determined that means it was an accidental shooting, charges you with manslaughter, and the court rules you cannot claim self-defense as a defense to prosecution. Whoops.

I researched this issue myself, and those sources that I found credible pretty much all agree on this -- no matter how righteous the shooting, keep your mouth shut, wait until you can have a calm talk with your lawyer. What really clinched it for me was when I was surfing the web, searching on terms related to this subject, and I ran across a couple police union websites that had exactly the same advice for their officers who are involved in LEO shootings.

I think having a lawyer's name and number handy is an excellent idea - and he will most likely know a bondsman if you need one.

I have also done this. It was last year when my Salvadorian next door neighbors threatened to kill me for calling the cops all the time on their extremely loud tejano music. Funny thing is I had quit smoking a week before, but at that point of stress...oh well.

Some lawyers answer their phone 24/7, but most don't. At that point I'd be more worried about who was going to clean up all the blood off of my floor.

It seems that the consensus is not to say much of anything other than that you felt threatened or where about to be murdered and then talk to a lawyer. I tend to agree with that.

One of my friends was raided one time for selling drugs (hey, we were young). The police had him in handcuffs and read him his rights and started asking questions. He told them that he would not answer a question without his attorney present. After all was said and done, he only spent one night in jail for a felony charge. Did he deserve to do time? Probably, but saying and doing the right things at that time kept him out of prison. He doesn't do anything like that anymore, but he certainly can't get a CHL or even buy a gun as a result.

I do agree with the conensus of the posters here, that its probably wise not to to say to much to the police until you have a lawyer present. Like everything else though there are always exceptions. Like there is another bad guy involved and hanging around, or a witness in the crowd who saw everything. etc.
