Thanks everyone. It is sounding like more of a myth than reality.

As for the pressure differences, I thought they were similar and the differences in pressures was simply because of two difference measuring methods.

I have shot this accurately at 500 yards at Tacpro, dinging a 2/3 scale IPSC steel silhouette target at will at that distance with my 18" DMR. I posted about that range day a year or two back.

I recommend a 1:7 twist for a 75gr bullet.

My DMR has a 1:8 twist, and it was spectacularly accurate....... at least until the wind kicked up.

That's the 500 yard line in the foreground, and you can see the 400, 300, and 200 yard lines in the distance and in the photo inset.

What do you guys use to spot a .223 hole in paper at 500 yards? Even with a reactive target and 50x spotting scope, I have trouble at 200 yards...

Probably my truck, but would consider my bicycle.

I use a 60x spotting scope and someone else's eyes.

I can vouch for 500 meters. In the USMC we qualified with the M16 5.56 with a peep sight and post to 500 meters every year.
