OOPS! Humerous fact-check fail.
I received this photo below and the highlighted sentence is rather humorous. The "Mare's Leg" was a gun created for the 1950's western series "Wanted Dead or Alive" starring Steve McQueen. It was used in Hollywood, but not on the range in the "Old West." When one is calling out someone on their lack of firearms knowledge, it would be a good idea to get the facts straight oneself.

Anyone notice he has what appears to be 45-70 rounds in his belt loop for a 44-40 rifle?Beiruty wrote:

You're exactly right. McQueen thought it has a more dramatic appearance. He was right!puma guy wrote:Anyone notice he has what appears to be 45-70 rounds in his belt loop for a 44-40 rifle?Beiruty wrote:

An unregistered SBR in Hollywood?
Actually, if actually a working firearm it would probably be from one of the movie prop gun suppliers and quite collectible C&R NFA item.

The rifles were real (Winchester '92's I think) and were modified with out checking the legality of doing so. There was a write up in a gun magazine about this back in the day. They did not comply with the NFA and were fined. Eventually the weapons ( there was more than one) were made legal.ScottDLS wrote:An unregistered SBR in Hollywood?

Yep. IIRC there were three of them used in the show, each was notably different than the others. They actually were chambered in something like .44-40 but McQueen carried something to tune of .45-70 cartridges in his belt for a more dramatic apperence as well. Similar weapons(possibly the same ones) have since been used in a number of movies and Tv shows since including the sci-fi themed firefly. Unfortunately OCT and it's president who supposedly resigned but is still president is more about the drama and entertainment than anything else (just like Hollywood)
How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

Here is Yul Brynner with a very interesting rifle that takes a side loading magazine. I have never seen this gun before. Does anyone know what gun this is?

Yep, I have one in fact, the legal logic on those is that they are made and sold as pistols. The originals used in Hollywood started life as rifles and were cut down therefor making them SBRs.wiliamr wrote:You can buy one as a Taurus Ranch Hand.

It doesn't look real to me. I may be wrong, but it looks more like a prop gun.DanD wrote:Here is Yul Brynner with a very interesting rifle that takes a side loading magazine. I have never seen this gun before. Does anyone know what gun this is?
