Cardboard Targets

I'm a new instructor preparing for my first class and am researching my target options. Does anyone use cardboard targets? Do you buy paper targets and mount them on cardboard yourself? Of course I'm interested in saving money, but I definitely want to deliver a high-quality class experience and don't want to have issues with flimsy targets.

If anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

I use the paper targets from Law Enforcement Targets. I bought both the targets and repair centers. I also built my own target stands using corrugated plastic sheeting as backers (available at LE Targets or locally at sign shops.) The targets are stapled or thumb-tacked to the backer giving you a very solid target to shoot at. I'll take some pics and post them tomorrow It's raining right now not good photo conditions.

I built a target stand out of 2x4s and mounted black board to them and can staple the target sheets to the black board. My stands are 6' high and 30" wide, they may be a little heavy but you need some weight to keep them standing in a wind.

As promised here's a couple of pictures of the target stands I've built. They are 2 feet wide and when the legs are extended 7 feet tall. They were made to fit the target stand holders on my gun club range. We have pipes in the ground on 2 foot centers to hold the frames the height is to get the X ring high enough that bullets will hit the backstop and not the ground in front of it. I made them foldable to be more easily transportable in a small pick up or SUV. With the legs folded they are five fee tall. They are made with 1X2 strips that fit readily into 1.5 inch pipe. I wanted something that would be light and portable.



This is the stand without a target.

I use a similar setup but just use cardboard for a backer. When the backer is shot up enough I'll just find another big box and cut a replacement.

I like to think it is my small way of recycling.

I'm high dollar. I like the cardboard targets because if it rains a little while shooting they don't fall down like paper. I have h frames made from 1 1/4" PVC with a groove cut on my table saw to slide the cardboard B-27 into. I also have the replacement 8 rings that only cost about 12 cents. If someone wants their target I just put another one up. I recycle the used ones for my own shooting with the replacement sheets.

My pvc frames mount to a 2x6 base H shaped as well, and heavy enough not to blow over. On top of the board I have two 1 1/4 pvc caps bolted down with bolts and washers that fit the inside of the cap. They have been great for a long time. occasionaly someone will shoot a side pipe. Those aren't glued in so they are replaced easily, in fact I just made 8 more today. I also learned to use thin wall stuff because it doesn't shatter. I'll have to see if I have a pic.

I found one, like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Since taking these pics which was my first design, I have eliminated the center t at the bottom, the cardboard does not need it. I have also shortened the side pipes to 36" so I don't have to lift the targets so high . (had shoulder surgery)
