Re: Costs for instructors course?
GC 541 1.1 90 in this manual describes the requirements:
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/ftp/forms/ls-16.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Basically, if you are not a full time law enforcement instructor, you get to take the 40 hour class in Austin, and you shoot the qualification just like students - except you have to pass with 90%. Which you should be able to do anyway, and with both a Semi and a Revolver. So minimum rounds is 100 :)
If you are a qualified instructor, they will let you take the 2 day class.
All course materials are provided by DPS.

Thanks, James. I have that information, but I was wondering what you, as an instructor, paid to take the instructors course in Austin. I'm trying to get my budget set up for when they offer the class. According to the manual, the instructors set the price, not DPS.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Re: Costs for instructors course?
The instructor's course is $100.
Re: Costs for instructors course?
Thanks much. Do you have to provide your own ammo? If so, how much?Crossfire wrote:The instructor's course is $100.

Yes. Unless it's changed, you provide your own firearms, ammo, food, lodging, transportation, etc.Catfight wrote:Thanks much. Do you have to provide your own ammo? If so, how much?Crossfire wrote:The instructor's course is $100.

Instructor candidates must qualify with both revolver and semiauto. Passing score is (was) 90%.

Ok, I expected as much... anyone recall how many rounds you need for the course including both revolver and SA?apostate wrote:Yes. Re: Costs for instructors course?
Once you register for the course, DPS will send you a detailed packet with all the info you need, including ammo requirements (they won't let you shoot just anything on their range).
You need 50 rounds to qualify with each firearm. If you pass the first time out, then you need 100. If you think you might be easily rattled, then bring 300. You have 3 chances to qualify, just like regular CHLers. The only difference is you have to pass at 90% instead of 70%, and you have to do it with a DPS trooper standing at your shoulder.

Re: Costs for instructors course?
As others have said, the DPS course fee is $100, plus 100 rds of ammo (minimum), hotel and either 3 or 4 days off work. (3 days if you are already an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor, otherwise 4 days.)

Re: Costs for instructors course?
Does this mean there may not be an instructors course this year? That would be annoying, as I just filled out my application.Catfight wrote:

Re: Costs for instructors course?
Oh sorry for the confusion...yes, there will indeed be a CHL instructors course in June (15-19). I just spoke with DPS about the status of my instructor app. (processing..yay) and asked them about it.jay524288 wrote:Does this mean there may not be an instructors course this year? Okay. Thanks for the clarification.
Re: Costs for instructors course?
If I don't have my Pistol instructors certification will the DPS CHL Instructors class cover this?
If I follow the post below I can get my certification to teach the CHL class if I go through the 4 day class at the DPS in Austin.
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Costs for instructors course?
In 2009 it would. Rumor says in 2013 DPS is going to enforce the NRA/TCLEOSE handgun instructor certification requirement for some people but not everyone, even though 411.190 requires at least one of these for all CHL instructors.fish wrote:If I don't have my Pistol instructors certification will the DPS CHL Instructors class cover this?
