First encounter
First encounter
While driving to work, I got stopped for doing 48MPH in a 40MPH zone on his radar. The motorcycle cop mentioned that I increased my speed to 52MPH when he pulled out to catch me.
Which reminds me of what I learned from my days of motorcycling where the speedo is usually 10% too fast on import bikes... and he was riding a BMW. Anyway, I didn't mention that to him.
So, I hands him my CHL and DL together eventhough I wasn't carrying. I told him that I wasn't carrying while handing him the licenses. He sees the CHL and asked "Do you have your piece on you?" (This is the first time I've heard in person using the word "piece". BTW, this is after I had already told him that I didn't.) Anyway, I remained in my car the whole time.
So now, I've finally broken my 14 year run of no speed tickets and will be looking for an online defensive driving class. Although I wasn't sure if I was speeding this time (I'm almost certain I was doing 45MPH, but I guess 48MPH may be a possibility at when he radared me), this ticket helps in bringing me back to driving within the speed limits again.
Anyway, this is my first encounter and my CHL didn't get me out of the ticket :) Maybe if I had my "piece" with me... hmmm.

I've taken it from them twice. Years ago for a ticket and most recently when my insurance discount expired.
You will be in front of your computer for as long as you would be sitting in class. They have it scheduled so that you cannot breeze through it.

"Wife Unit" still tries the old method of "tears"...llwatson wrote:Evidently you guys need to practice the big smile when handing the CHL to the officer.
Haven't had a single ticket since getting my CHL. Been stopped, uh... more than once.
I told her that I would have handed her a box of Kleenex, as I kept writing...
Shhhhh, nobody tell her that part, K?

Traffic Stop
I was stopped for the first time in many years yesterday on the I 45 N feeder. Buy the time the officer (Shenandoah) reached the side of my truck I had the door open (window switch is acting up) with my License, CHL and Insurance card in my hands on the top of the steering wheel. On seeing the CHL he asked where my weapon was, to which I replied "on my right hip" Officer replied to please keep my hand clear of that area and that was the last mention of the CHL. He told me I was doing 67 on the feeder and did I know the limit was 45, I replied that I was aware of the limit but didn't realize I was moving that fast. He gave, me a verbal warning and sent me on my way.
While being stopped is never fun, this stop could not have gone any better. I suspect that the CHL may have gotten me the warning instead of a ticket, but in any event I will be paying more attention to my speedometer in the future!

I got pulled over for 53 in a 45 bout 3 wks ago in FTW......I drive a wrecker and usually LEO's are VERY nice us THANKS TO ALL THE LEO's.....
I handed him my DL only cuz i havnt recieved my CHL yet. We dissccused my speading for a moment then he asked me if i had my CHL. I was shocked that he would ask that outta the blue. I told him no. He then asked if i had any weapons in my truck. Shocked again, I said no. Thats when he asked if I liked guns alot and i told him yes but asked why the questions....in a very polite manor... He said he had noticed my gun mag. in the other seat and was curious. Thats when I told him that I had taken my CHL class the day before. He said that was cool. Went back to his car and retuned with a speeding ticket for me and told me to slow down.
Hmmmmm
I cant help but wander if it would've helped me if already had my CHL

I need to remember to do this when I get my renewed CHL...
I used to "clear" tape both my DL and the CHL together just so they would stay together for this very purpose...Saves me some time, and have had no complaints or concerns voiced about this "system"...
I also for the life of my CHL, have I ever expected anything but a citation if I get caught with a heavy foot on the gas...I believe it gets all the frustration out of the way, before I say something a bit off to upset whomever is stopping me...Attitude is key, and I don't plan on getting anything but a free bowl of soup with it, if that at the very least...
I also believe a lot of people have gotten really good at making sure any potential traffic stop they do everything to ensure Law Enforcement sees we are doing things to make sure the stop is safe for them...Dome light at night, hands on the wheel, yes sir/maam, no sir/maam...
We should pat ourselves on the back for making this issue almost a moot point...

This seems like it could cause a little bit of hassle. It doesn't happen much anymore, but when I used to order a drink in the restaraunts that were required to be a "private club" I would give them my DL and they would swipe it through a reader thing... They also do that when I get my annual Hunting License.stevie_d_64 wrote: I used to "clear" tape both my DL and the CHL together just so they would stay together for this very purpose...Saves me some time, and have had no complaints or concerns voiced about this "system"....
There is also important information on the back of the DL you don't want to cover up.

I envisioned taping the top edge or the CHL to the bottom edge of the DL, so you can fold them over and store them in the wallet, but be able to see both sides. I thought that's what he meant by this, but I'll let him answer for himself.KRM45 wrote:This seems like it could cause a little bit of hassle. Just me, but I don't attach the DL and CHL. In fact, I carry my CHL upside and backwards in my wallet, so when my DL comes out all you see behind it is the bar code on my CHL. Too many places need to see your DL as identification (using a credit card at Gander mountain comes to mind), but I don't have any reason to show 'em my CHL. And my DL always comes out when I rent a car, and I sure don't want an Avis agent in Chicago to see CONCEALED HANDGUN LICENSE staring them in the face...I'm sure those little 1/8"-tall red letters will look like a big neon sign.
