Allows a school/district to verify that a person has an LTC prior to giving written consent to allowing that person to carry at the school. The school can inquire and still deny.
Currently LTC status can only be disclosed by DPS to criminal justice agencies.

Re: SB 1555 - Authorization to carry in a school
Seems to me to be unnecessary.
Why can't the school just request to see the actual license?

Because the LTC holder is under no obligation to show it outside of when ID is demanded by a law enforcement officer.
Think of how this law can be abused. Currently, there is no way the public can get a record of all the LTCs in the state of Texas. If a school district really wanted to, they could submit the name of each person who could come in contact with a student, claiming they wanted to know if they had a legitimate LTC. DPS must then respond with a yes or no for each name and voila, the school district has a list of ALL the parents/relatives/friends/neighbors/TEACHERS who have an LTC. There is nothing preventing them from releasing that information to the public, unlike DPS.
Additionally, Texas is an at will state... no reason they can't just let teachers with LTCs go. After all it is, "for the safety of the children".

And under current law, a school district is under no obligation to allow a good guy to carry in schools.Papa_Tiger wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2019 9:08 amBecause the LTC holder is under no obligation to show it outside of when ID is demanded by a law enforcement officer.
I agree with Liberty that the bill seems unnecessary. If somebody wants to carry in a school, the school adminsitration can request to see their license. If the requestor refuses to display their license, the school can refuse to authorize carry. No new laws are required for the status quo.

Adding additional entities, to the list of those allowed access, to LTC holders. Is just one more chance for that the info to be mishandled. Giving school districts, the ability to allow LTC holders to carry, is all that is necessary. If they still want to verify it, they can utilize the same system they use at the Capitol, which just scans the LTC and instantly verifies that it is current. JMHO

So is there a huge run of fake LTC's? Your LTC has an expiration date on the card, that is sufficient!Jusme wrote: ↑Fri Mar 08, 2019 8:39 amGator Guy wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2019 9:16 amAnd under current law, a school district is under no obligation to allow a good guy to carry in schools.Papa_Tiger wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2019 9:08 amBecause the LTC holder is under no obligation to show it outside of when ID is demanded by a law enforcement officer.
