High Noon

While still waiting for my custom IWB holsters, I decided to order the Bare Asset from High Noon Holsters. Ordered Friday and they arrived yesterday.

Got one for my S&W J frame and my Sigma 9. I adjusted the tension screw for both and tried them out last evening, both tucked and untucked. Very comfortable for both, even the Sigma 9. And, both just disappear even when tucked. I'm 6'5", 240 lbs, with a 40" waistline. I'll probably wear them untucked most of the time since I wear guayaberras daily but it's nice to know I can conceal both easily if I have to wear a shirt tucked in. Retention is excellent, without a thumb strap, and I can draw reasonably well. I'll have to adjust to the grip being so much closer to my body. It will be interesting to see what difference the custom made holsters make when they arrive.

Looks interesting. With the skin side not being smooth, I wonder if that will wear a little differently or become irritating on that spot. I look forward to your conclusion.

It will be interesting to see what difference the custom made holsters make when they arrive.

A custom made holster will be made of thicker and sturdier material. The mouth of the holster will remain open so that it will be easier and safer to put the gun into the holster. You will be able to draw faster because of less friction. Assuming you ordered a model with a sweat guard, it will keep the grip from digging into your side. If you ordered your custom made holster with straps it will be easier to adjust and not move around as easily as the metal clipped Bare Asset. Your Bare Asset will be keeping your other holsters company in your "spare holster drawer."

Yeah, I do expect the Bare Asset to move to the spare holster drawer when the custom holsters arrive; and I'm really looking forward to getting them. But, the Bare Asset does have an extra piece of leather sewn around the top of the holster to help maintain the shape for one-handed re-holstering. Works well so far but the leather is still breaking in. I wear a 1 1/4" belt and the holster doesn't move with the J frame. I haven't carried the Sigma 9 yet, don't expect to very much; I have two Bianchi speedstrips with me for a total of 15 rounds. And, the J frame is comfortable...and I do prefer revolvers.

Works well so far but the leather is still breaking in.

I forgot one more thing. A custom holster doesn't need to breaking in. I have two bare asset holsters and neither one remains open for one-handed holstering.

I've been using the Bare Asset now for about 10 days. I've learned that about 8:30 is best with the forward cant bringing the butt of my pistol close to my body and in a good position for draw. And, it doesn't move around there at all. At 9:00, the pistol can slip out with a lot of bending and stooping even with a good set on the retention screw; didn't fall out just popped up until the cylinder was above the top of the holster. But, it would have fallen out if I hadn't felt it move and if I'd really been active, I think.. I can confirm that one-handed re-holstering isn't possible. Still waiting for the custom holster but I have discovered that IWB is definitely the way to go for me.

To close the loop on this discussion, I've been using my custom made waistband holsters (IWB) from Mika's Pocket Holsters for about 3 months now (one each for S&W 638 and Sigma 9VE. The quality of the holsters is excellent, the leather is high quality, and retention is excellent without a thumbstrap. The clip is very strong and ensures the holster will not come out when you draw. And, the top of the holster is reinforced to keep it open for one-handed re-holstering. The High Noon holsters were excellent for interim use, the only quibble being that after a few days of use, the holster would collapse after removing the handgun and I could not re-holster with one hand. Unfortunately, I have learned that I prefer a forward cant and am now using the holsters until I find the "right" one with a cant. Ah, the holster drawer continues to fill!

my high noon is not smooth and hurts little on long wears and I agree don't like unable to reholstering. I ended up getting a minituck for that reason. more of comfort and safety.
