Ammo cans at Wal-Mart? Almost

I was wandering in Wal-Mart and complaining to the sporting goods guy about the high cost of surplus ammo cans.

He showed me one of these:

The one Wal-Mart has is ORANGE and sells for $7.83 + tax, same brand.
W-M calls it a "Boat dry storage box".

It's plastic, but I bought one to try anyway.

It will hold 24 boxes of Blazer Brass 45 ACP and 5 boxes of 9mm also.
I was barely able to lift it. But the handle didn't come off in my hand.

I have my doubts about the "dry" part. It's too flexible and the gasket is thin.

If you want something to store some ammo or other stuff. Take a look at one.

If I could find a good 50 cal surplus can for $8 Il'd rather have that.

I don't know about anyone else, but this is a help to me. I have been trying to decide to buy this exact box at Wal Mart or buy some more surplus boxes. I think I am going to give Wal Mart a shot - at least one.

I believe Midway had 50 cal cans for ~$7 apiece not too long ago. Shipping was extra but no tax:)

I ran across these when searching. I rarely see this side-opening style anymore. I believe they're old WWII items. They're perfect for holding a case of 9mm in 50 rd boxes. I have a few that I use, but would like more.

Actually, thru 5/31, Midway has .30 cans for $3.99. .50 cans are $4.99 (7") and $5.99 (10"), respectively.

I picked up one of the orange boxes at Wal-Mart tonight. It is narrower than the Contico Dry Boxes that I've been buying. But the Contico's would hold more than I could carry, so that might be a good thing.

Wow, I guess it's a regional market, but there are no "high cost" ammo cans here in NE Texas, right next door to Red River Army Depot. Typical cost here from local sellers is $3-5 per can; .50 cal is more readily available, and the smaller .30 cal cans often cost more.

I've got a closet full of .50 cal cans, with various ammo and accessories.

Part of the "High cost" problem is the shipping charge factor. I've seen some $6 50 cal cans that the shipping was $9 per can.

SO, KBCraig, when are you comming to the Houston area???????

Example: I want 2 50 cal ammo cans. Say a vendor at a Houston gun show sells them for $8. $12 gas round trip, $6 to park, $12 for me and wife to get in. I just added $32 to the cost of the cans!!

It makes my head hurt. I just can not pay $18 shipping for 2 $6 cans!

Don't any of you worry, I'll get over it. It's hard when you are frugal.

The I-10 east store has had a decent stock of cans in the past. However, their stock comes and goes I havent been to the others.

It varies. Local folks buy them by the pallet load, sometimes by a truckload of pallets.

I told another forum member that I'd check who's selling them. I'll let you know.

If you're looking for smaller quantities, one local (Texarkana) place that I pass by daily has ammo cans for $4. Hackett's Farm Equipment on FM 989 (King's Highway), just about 1/2 mile from US 59. Business hours are a little spotty, so call ahead at 903-838-2611.

Just west of Texarkana on I-30 (Leary exit, on the north frontage road), Turner's Army Surplus has .50 cal cans for $5.95 and .30 cal cans for $3.95, and they also have 20mm and SAW cans. You can't miss this place: they have a retired F-111 parked out front!

Sorry, I missed that one. I was too busy in PM with folks who want to pick them up in person and avoid shipping when passing through the Texarkana area (thanks to Red River Army Depot).

I betcha that folks in El Paso and Killeen/Copperas Cove also know of places to buy cans locally.
