DVD's

Are tactical pistol training DVD's any good?
And if so are there any recommendations?
As I'm about to do my CHL renewal I realize I did not do any pistol training in the 4 years it took for my license to expire.
I intended to but just never did it. While I'm searching out what training is out there, where it is, and think about scheduling something I'm wondering if training DVD's would be a better than nothing stop gap measure and give me something to practice.
Any thoughts?

John-
Please let me be the first to welcome you to the forum! I am glad you realize how important training is.
I do not have any video to recommend, but can say that situational training around the house with dry fire is always a good investment of your time.
Make sure your gun is unloaded five or six times and then check it again. Once you are sure....play the "what if" game around your house for twenty or thirty minutes a day and decide what you would do before it happens.
Practice getting your sights on target, focusing on the front sight, and giving the trigger a smooth press.
Hopefully someone will come along shortly with a product suggestion that might help....what I offer surely can't hurt! Take care and shoot safe.

The best thing that I have come across is not in video but in competitive shooting such as IDPA. The thing to realize is it a game & what you get out of it is significantly improved reaction time and greatly improved gun handling & drawing from holster - site picture - and trigger control. Good luck!

Most of the DVDs I am aware of are more advanced than for anyone that has not worked with their gun in 4 years. I'd recommend hooking up with a shooting buddy to help you review your basics. While dry fire can help, only real fire can give you the feedback to let you know if your sight alignment is correct and your trigger press adequately smooth. That should get you through your renewal and hopefully rekindle and interest in maintaining your skill.

John, welcome to TexasCHLforum. Are you close to Houston? If so, you can join us during our informal practice session at PSC on Sunday afternoons. That is, if we ever get back to doing them.

Sunday afternoon in general is good for me and I'm in Sugar Land.
I think PSC is one of the websites I was looking at today....would I need to become a member first or is there a "check it out first" deal?
We shot 75 rounds at Bailey’s 2 weeks ago and another 75 at American Shooting last week and I’m feeling pretty good about the new gun as far as the CHL is concerned.
I’m also comfortable with handling malfunctions (on the range) and such it’s just that I was looking at the tactical shooting they have at Top gun on Tuesday nights and even the intro prerequisite seems more “intense than I’m ready for right now. So it’s not that I’m a total novice or anything but as far as what I think of when I see the word tactical…. I’m not there either.
Same with the intensive courses I see online, they look too advanced for me and the basic intro classes look too remedial. So I was thinking instructional DVD’s, snap caps, range time, etc… as at least a start in the right direction.

You should also check out Hoffner's Elite Team drills on the first Wednesday of each month from 7-9pm at Top Gun Range. They go over basic drills (presentation, malfunctions, multiple targets, etc...) each session.

This sounds about perfect, I'll check it out.
Thanks!
