WTB Moss500 or Rem870 for HD

Just bought our first house and so I wanted to upgrade the borrowed nightstand revolver to a under the bed shotgun. I was going to start looking around some pawn shops to try and find a good deal on a Mossburg 500 or Remington 870 but figured I would take a crack at the Texas CHL forum first.
I would want to do FTF in the DFW area. Looking for something 18.5in but with the ability to buy a longer barrel if I wanted to do some skeet.
My wife says it needs to be under $200 to keep me from being exiled to the couch for weeks. Synthetic is ok, wood is preferred.
12ga is great 20ga is less favorite but if the price is right (and its good looking wood) I would snap it up.
Anyways, if anyone can help me out.
Thanks!

I got my Mossberg 500 at a pawn shop for $175.00. I think Academy even has them from time to time for under $200.00

Good to know they are at least out there in the Pawns for that kind of price. Going to be keeping an eye on Academy too. Thanks.

They have the Maverick 88 for that, but not finding the 500 for those kind of prices..
GREAT topic as I was looking just today to buy a new HD shottie
I hate pawn shops, due to my dislike of haggling, I know some folks love it, but not I,, Give me a fair price, I'll likely pay it and we both are happy.
That said I hit the pawn shops on the way home... Used Mossberg 500 18.5 barrel, $428 price tag
For the gun you get at a nice price, the Mossberg Maverick 88 sure seems like a good buy on a gun that by all tales I've read, goes bang every time you squeeze the trigger.

Bronco, I'm not surprised the price was so high. I was just thinking that used gun prices are probably going to be all jacked up for a while because of the CO shooting and the sudden surge in gun sales. So all the scummy pawn shops (and even the legit ones) are probably raising their prices.
Thats why I was poking around here to see if any DFW CHL'ers wanted to sell me theirs.

I have a maverick and it goes bang everytime. A friend bought a Win SPX (i think) and it was bad out of the box.
Only draw back to the maverick is that most of the accessories that are out there are for the 500 and they won't fit the maverick.

Thanks for the tip on the Maverick. I told my wife about it and she said "oh, that sounds like a good deal."
So if I can't find anything at the pawn shops then I have "permission" (based on her comment, "Well, you said it was a good deal!!") to snap up one of those Mavericks.
Also I heard if you swap out the pump/side with a Moss500 one that there are more accessories that will fit your Maverick.

I bought a Mossberg Maverick 88 with a heat sheild and side saddle for around $160 slightly used.. Unfortunately it was stolen in a burglary. Nevertheless it was a GREAT home defense weapon. Never FTF/FTE.
Also,

I ended up buying a Maverick 88 as well, but I must be the odd man out because I kept having issues with the forearm breaking on me (the action rod is pinned to the plastic forearm). So...... I turned it into a project gun. I bought a 500 bolt and action assembly with two action bars and drilled out the receiver, put a side saddle on the receiver and added a Knoxx recoil absorbing stock. This is what it looks like now......

I invested about $300ish into it and it functions flawlessly

Ooops! This little baby followed me home from the weekend fishing trip... probably had nothing to do with that pit stop at the pawn shop.
Those guys were trying to sell this slightly used Maverick 88 for just over $200! I told them Academy had it NEW for $189 and talked him down to $147. Not sure how I could get it any cheaper than that.
Also made a pit stop on the way home to pickup "I'm sorry I unexpectedly bought a gun on my way home from a fishing tip while you were at home dealing with a fussy baby and not having fun" flowers.

I like to stop in and look at the handguns at the various pawn shops. One pawn shop had a used Springfield XD Service without the accessories that they were trying to sell for $650. I thought that was more than list price for a new one. Conversely, another one had a used Springfield XD9SC for $360. I wish I had snapped that up.
I'm in the market for a good cheap, but reliable 12g pump action for Home Defense. I will start looking in the pawn shops. Thanks for that tip.

FYI, the stocks are interchangeable between the Maverick and 500. I have both. The 500 is for the house, the Maverick goes in the Mule when out on the land. Both go bang every time.
