I have a glock 21 in .45, that I might like to trade with you if you were interested. It MIGHT have 2 boxes down it. Just looking for a better concealment option and have been thinking about an XD

I have this XDm in a two tone, and it is an excellent pistol. Just excellent. That holster of mine you liked in that picture was cradling my XDm.jb2012 wrote:I have a glock 21 in .45, that I might like to trade with you if you were interested. It MIGHT have 2 boxes down it. Ahh very nice! These seem to have a substantially smaller profile than the glocksThe Annoyed Man wrote:I have this XDm in a two tone, and it is an excellent pistol. Just excellent. Here is the most unbiased comparison I can offer, since I own both brands:jb2012 wrote:Ahh very nice! I came over to the dark side not too long ago and I have reconciled with Glock. Glock (which my browser keeps wanting to autocorrect to "Block") just makes it too easy, and I carry a G17 a lot of the time now. But that's a 9mm. With the exception of the G36 (single stack), the Glock .45s have a slide kind of like the flight deck of a super carrier. They are HUGE. The slide width on the G30 Gen 4 (which is narrower than the grip width) is 1.27". Further, the Glock slide is box-shaped in cross section, so it is as wide at the top as it is at the bottom. It doesn't matter to me how well the .45s shoot, I just can't bear to look at that big fat Glock .45 slide! The grip width on the XDM Compact 3.8 is 1.26" (actually, mine mics out at 1.24" across the grip), which is narrower than the Glock's slide, and it measures 1.28" including the protruding controls like the slide stop and takedown levers, and the slide is narrower than that. Glock doesn't provide the frame width on a G30. The XDM slide is 1.084" at the bottom (measured on my digital micrometer) and tapers inward to .912" at the bottom of the upper radius, and .625" across the flat at the top.
The slide width aside, the XDM Compact 3.8 in .45 is definitely a smaller gun than a G30.....but when you lay them side-by-side (I have done so) only by an relatively small amount, but it seems like the XDM is better shaped for concealed carry. Capacity is a tradeoff. The G30 carries 10+1 rounds, the XDM carries 9+1. But the XDM also comes with a 13 round backup magazine with a grip extension sleeve. You'd have to buy an optional backup mag to equal that with the G30, and then you might have to buy a sleeve extension for it if you wanted it to be comfortable. With the short mags in place, the G30 and XDM are within small fractions of an inch the same length and height, but the XDM is slightly narrower. The G30 is by a small amount the lighter of the two guns unloaded. It weighs 26.3 oz unloaded (presumably with the plastic short mag inserted, but Glock doesn't say). The XDM weighs 27 oz with the compact stainless steel magazine inserted. It would seem that the primary difference in carry weight would consist of the weight of the 11th round (10+1) that the G30 can hold, versus the 10 rounds (9+1) of the XDM.
The XDM is the "nicer" of the two guns. It has a better "match" trigger and a match grade barrel, and it has cocking serrations at the front of the slide, which the Glock does not. Some people prefer the Glock trigger, and it's not a bad trigger, but when I shoot my G17 and XDM side by side, like I did last Saturday, I still prefer the XDM trigger. The Glock takedown buttons are a royal pain in the patootie. If you have fat fingers like I do, it is nearly impossible to get both of them pulled downward simultaneously to take down the gun for cleaning. The XDM's takedown procedure could not be simpler. You lock the slide back, rotate the takedown lever upward 90º, release the slide stop while easing the slide assembly off the frame. Other amenities the XDM has which the Glock is either lacking, or has not done as well as it could: The XDM's loaded chamber indicator is easier to see and feel, and is separated from the extractor as a second mechanism. The XDM has a cocking indicator which protrudes from the rear of the slide to indicate if the gun is cocked. The Glock does not. I mentioned that the XDM has stainless steel magazines, while the Glock's are plastic. The XDM has a grip safety in addition to the trigger and internal safety mechanisms. The Glock does not. Some argue that the grip safety is unnecessary and presents a possible point of failure, but I come from the 1911 world and find that a grip safety is a good idea. I don't feel like my Glock is unsafe at all, but I do appreciate the additional layer of safety found in the XDM. The XDM's mag release button is ambidextrous. The Gen 4 Glocks allow you to reverse the mag release button for use by lefties, but it isn't ambidextrous out of the box.
And then there's "curb appeal". The XDM is by far the prettier gun......if that matters to you.....particularly if you think of open carrying it. That said, I'll be the first to say that curb appeal should not be the primary reason you carry a gun - either concealed or in the open.
Both guns shoot very softly for caliber, but the XDM shoots softer. I say that because when a compact .45 feels like a soft-shooting full-sized 9mm of similar weight, that is a very soft-shooting gun. I am more confident of accuracy with my XDM despite the 1/2" longer sight radius on the G17, but the G17 is still reasonably accurate. I can't speak to how a G30 would shoot, not having ever fired one. I have replaced the sights on both my XDM and G17 with the very excellent Trijicon HD sights with bright orange front sight (Springfield Version, Glock Version).
Either gun would serve you very well, and if I didn't already have the user experience with both brands, I could be happy for life with my Glock. I finally surrendered to the idea of regularly carrying a Glock because they have become to semi autos what the S&W revolvers are to wheel guns. Parts and armorers are nearly universally available, and they are simple to work on. However, I have had the experience of owning both brands, and if I were personally on the market for a compact carry .45 today, I would buy THIS gun from killerquad. You'll never see another one at that price, and you'll never regret the purchase. Then later, if you want, get yourself an ugly gun you won't mind getting scratched up or temporarily confiscated by law enforcement.
