We need to remove the idiot "gun free zone" and start training & arming teachers and selected key personnel along with higher security (doors, video cameras, access by others only with approved ID, etc.

Several schools have already adopted these precautions, including a number in Texas. You will never identify and prevent psychos (adults and children) from shooting others for recreation. But, you can decrease the probability that a bad guy/girl can access certain places; and, if found, bring down the tough arm of the Law and put them in a cage (or something more permanent). When I was in public school in the 40s and 50s, there was NEVER an act of violence! Kids respected others and if not, just got into a minor fight... and, Principals and Parents never "spared the rod"...

drives me crazy if i have to visit my sister there.

Once teachers and administrators with a CHL are permitted to conceal carry in schools, all this will stop immediately. They will then pick other locations to make their last statement.

You know it is time we start teaching responsibility. Maybe it is time to allow parents to beat their kids butts if they do something wrong. If I messed up in school my butt was red when I got home. Now days we reward kids with taking responsibility away from them. "Oh you got pregnant? Oh I am so sorry, here let us transfer you to a school setup just for you."

What should be done is WHY did this happen, not "OMG guns caused all this damage." Sadly, I doubt that will happen here.

This incident does not qualify as a "mass shooting" (4+ killed at random by lone shooter with no particular motive)

It's a "school shooting" only in the most basic sense that it happened at a school.

It did provoke a massive, well-executed, professional response from school & first responders.

But at the end of the day, this seems little more than a premeditated attempted murder of a particular target with a few innocent casualties and a murderer who offed himself. Yes, the wannabe murderer was an adolescent, but so are many of the 500 murderers every year in Chicago. What's the difference between this incident and a drive by in front of a Chicago school or playground. The 24-hour news networks don't drop everything and cover Chicago drive bys as Breaking News.

This incident is a big deal in the media today because its physical proximity to other Colorado shootings and calendar proximity to Newtown shooting give media another opportunity to push for gun control.

But - sickeningly - the lack of a high body count means covrage of this incident will quickly fade. We'll get a weekend of libtard gun control shaming (that we were going to get for Newtown anniversary anyway), then this will be forgotten.

Pretty much the way I see it going down as well. The only thing I might add is we will also have to listen to the libtards tell us all about what a great kid the murderer was and proclaim that it was too easy for him to get a gun.

I'm suggesting that we come up with something else other than blaming the liberals...

Colorado has had an awful recent history of incidents like this.. We need to do what we can as a group to be sympathetic, supportive, and come up with productive solutions otherwise the centrist moms and dads will start to think that removing all guns might solve the problem. The more this kind of stuff happens, the bigger fight we've got.

Like just about every other forced choice, the alternatives offer no solution but simply demand that a person choose between the lessor of two perceived evils. It is much like going to vote in an election and having two unappealing candidates. That is because complex matters never have simple solutions, regardless of what those with political agendas try to say.

1. Removal of gun free zones, by itself, is not going to stop those with evil intent from harming others. Security experts will tell you that the answer to threats is layers of preventive measures. Many here believe that one of those layers needs to be a last ditch, when all else fails way to stop an evil doer. It is not a singular solution to the problem.
2. Bans do not work. Countries who have banned guns still have gun violence. Often what might have been gun violence is turned into some other type of violence and therefore is dismissed as non-violence. It is like claiming that banning guns prevents suicides. It doesn't. Some of the countries with the highest suicide rates have banned guns. Banning drugs hasn't worked. Banning alcohol didn't work. It each of those cases, the bans have produced nasty side effects.

For me, the root of the problem is leaving school security in the hands of school administration. What a foolish idea. Many school administrators are self-serving tyrants who view the school environment as their own private fiefdom and absolutely get off in controlling it. They have no background and training in security. The district where our granddaughter attends school has recently hired a security expert who is evaluating an overall security strategy and reviewing each campus for it unique security challenges. I'm hoping that a more common sense approach will result and I'm lobbying through one of my school board members to have teachers with CHLs be considered in that plan. Explaining such a program to the centerist parents is a far better way than giving them the forced choice decision.

I thank our Creator each day, that so far there was no terrorist attack on a school or educational institution like what happened in Russia. After said incident, I still cannot believe the lack of armed security and security measures at virtually all educational institutions.
Terrorists, it seems, are more sane than a wannabe tough Joe schmoe, of no-mama and no-papa of America.

To the point that layers of security are a good approach, here is another school district with a good, logical step that accomplishes several things.

The district has been offering free lunches to police officers in an effort to get more armed security inside schools.

[quote="K.Mooneyham"]My kid goes to a large local high school. Their school has an ARMED police officer on duty. Do you think that kid in Colorado would have pulled that stunt if an armed police officer was on campus there? Of course, we'll never know...but I know how I'd bet my money.

I do believe Columbine had an armed Officer on campus. The High Schools in Katy are shopping mall size with multiple entrances. You would need several Officers to protect someplace that large. Well trained and armed school personnel offers a quick, cost effective deterrent.

It appears this High School had a Police Officer too.

I read in another forum that the kid was an enthusiastic socialist. The kid that shoot the Congresswoman was a leftist, the kid that shoot up the movie theater was, too. The Connecticut guy was too messed up to count.

The obvious solution is to ban socialists.

Liberalism is a mental disorder, after all.

One thing we can all agree on is that there are crazy people and there always will be. Nothing in the way of disarming will ever work because there are so many ways to kill people. How hard is it to make a pipe bomb if someone wanted to? I am for having armed security at schools ( chl or paid pros) but they will not eliminate killings, only cut the numbers down. No matter what we do there will always be this kind of action from the crazies and the best we can do is to try to keep the numbers hurt to a minimum because we can't eliminate crazy. This school might have been able to keep this young man from walking into the school with his shotgun but he probably would have started shooting people at the doorway. There are no answers to this problem. The left will try to say "get rid of guns" and use this as they always do. We all know that it will not stop the killing. We also know that there is no answer that will work.
