I'd say this guy is toast.

Worst yet, he expressed glee.

Anyone who is forced to kill in self-defense would be best served conveying regret, or better yet, conveying no sentiment at all.

I don't think most people are not going to be able to control their reactions well enough after something like that. Also, people react to stress and that adrenaline dump differently. Reacting to stress with humor is not all that unusual even if it is often inappropriate. Another reason to not get chatty with police and have a lawyer you can call.
