Otherwise someone could've been hurt by an irresponsible vigilante returning fire at this guy:

And this is the stuff that just makes me crazy
Records show Chaney faced weapons charges in 2010 but those charges were later dropped. He was sentenced in 2009 to one year of court supervision for unlawful use of a weapon and failing to register a firearm.
So this creep has been in the "no guns" system before and been let off. Why? If I were to make the mistake of getting caught with a gun in this same area, they'd be quick to make an example of me, just like the woman at the 9-11 Memorial (story running in a different thread here now.) I want to print 1,000s of copies of this story and send them to every anti in the country, asking them to explain to me in detail, how these situations happen. After all, IL has a no guns policy.

Then again, I'd just be wasting my time. The facts never matter to antis.

No, they don't. People just lump all of Illinois into one pile. There are two parts of Illinois; Illinois and Chicago. They are totally different. And, yes, Illinois has a FOID (Firearms Owner ID) card that you are required to have to own a firearm, but they do allow them. There are tons of guns in outstate Illinois and some majorly good hunting in the southern part of the state.

Bottom line, don't confuse Cook County (Chicago) with the rest of the state.

IL State Police are also on record as saying they recognize an out-of-state CHL as equivalent to an IL FOID.

I get your point, to a point. The problem is that there are laws on the books and we are either law abiding citizens or we aren't. I could probably have carried my pistol with me without a CHL but doing that doesn't stay within the rule of law. When we give up the rule of law, what have we become?

My point wasn't really about the fact that Cooke County and the rest of IL are different but about the fact that the gun laws are supposed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. The OP contained an excellent example of where that should have happened and didn't. In NJ, the story was the same. Lots of repeat offenders, terrorizing half of the population of Newark with almost utter impunity. There were lots of excuses for the lack of prosecution but it came down to the DA not wanting to quickly fill up the jails. They wait until the BG murders someone and then it is just too bad for the victim - who was legally prevented from defending his or herself. Newark and Camden are very much like Chicago in that regard. I really didn't know many people in lower NJ (which at one point wanted to secede from the upper part) who ignored the State's draconian gun laws.

I probably won't worry too much about taking a gun in our RV into Ocean City but I'd be paranoid even following Federal transport guidelines and traveling above Princeton. A simple traffic stop could turn ugly and expensive.
