DFW FMJ Ranges?
Greetings,
It's been a while since I've shot any of my rifles just from being busy and such. A few new purchases have me interested in finding a new go-to rifle range. I shoot several calibers from .22LR to .30-06. Finding a rifle range isn't the problem. Finding one that will let me shoot FMJ/steel-case/steel-core/bi-metal jacket ammo is the continuing issue I face.
I was going to ask for tips on ranges in the Dallas area, but my research on here and other sites leads me to believe that finding something nearby just isn't realistic. So, I'm expanding my area to the whole DFW and neighboring region.
First thing I know most people will think to mention is Gibson's in Mesquite... and I would really rather have some other options due to a number of reasons you can find all over the net if you do a search on them. Also, I would prefer not to join a private club as my experience has shown me that they usually aren't worth the money FOR ME personally. Anyone know if Magnum Sports in Sanger is still open and would fit most of what I am looking for (especially on ammo)?
So, some grading criteria to give the readers an indication of what I am looking for.
+10 for minimal ammo restrictions (allows FMJ/steel-case/steel-core/bi-metal jacket/etc)
+1 for rifle ranges offered over 100 yards
+1 if closer to Dallas than Fort Worth
+1 if people like the range more than hate the people who run it
+1 if the range doesn't harass for taking home the brass that I brought
+1 for flexible days and hours of operation
I appreciate any advice the community has for me.
Happy 2013!

Re: DFW FMJ Ranges?
I'm a platinum member at Extreme Defensive Shooting Range. It is a private range (not really a club). So regarding your requirements:
No ammo restrictions (+10 for minimal ammo restrictions (allows FMJ/steel-case/steel-core/bi-metal jacket/etc))
Rifle is only 100 yards, but the owner has the land to expand and is looking at doing so
Located in Royse City (+1 if closer to Dallas than Fort Worth)
I like it a lot (+1 if people like the range more than hate the people who run it)
Take home all the brass you want, even that left by other members (+1 if the range doesn't harass for taking home the brass that I brought)
Anytime, day or night. Platinum members have the gate code and can go whenever they want (+1 for flexible days and hours of operation)
So, EDSR gets a +11 out of 12.
BTW, it's $250/2 years for a platinum membership. There are no additional fees.

Elm fork allows fmj on their 50yd rifle line.

Re: DFW FMJ Ranges?
From what I have read about Elm Fork, they like most ranges in the area have a problem with ammo that uses steel (steel core, bi-metal jackets, etc) such as most of the surplus ammo and the Wolf/Tula stuff.
Have they changed their stance?
I do intend to get deeper into reloading, but some days you just want to shoot whatever it is that you have or can affordably get a hold of. It would be great if more ranges would loosen up on their ammo restrictions, but I know... Their range... Their rules... Their insurance conflicts...

Re: DFW FMJ Ranges?
On a side note, I've seen that optic rule at other ranges too. I love optics. I love what we have available today for our selection of modern day optics. We are rather blessed.
I just don't want to put them on every rifle that I want to fire a few rounds through. In particular my C&Rs that I am trying to keep in fairly original condition.
I still appreciate the suggestion, and will re-examine Elm Fork as I have heard many positive things about them as well.

Eagle Gun Range in Lewisville allows everything but 50 cal - FMJ allowed, but no armor piercing
see rule 12: http://eaglegunrangetx.com/index.php?op ... Itemid=477" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
indoor range, 25yards only.

By "armor piercing steel", I'm betting that they are referring to steel-core ammo. And most military surplus ammo is steel-core as well.No muzzle loading firearms may be fired on the range. No fully automatic, tracer, armor piercing steel and military surplus ammo are allowed on the range.
Re: DFW FMJ Ranges?
I have had good luck at Elm Fork as well. Never any questions in the tactical bay and nice to not have powered optics on 50 yards. That is where I like to set up my EoTech. I do like the guys that work in the tactical bay more than some of the other range officials...they seem much more tolerant of what you want to do in there.
I don't carry my 40 all the time, just when I leave my home!
Re: DFW FMJ Ranges?
So looks like Elm Fork is the best option? I'm about to buy some mosin ammo but hate to have to spend 18 bucks on a box of 20 when I can get cheap surplus...

Re: DFW FMJ Ranges?
Actually, Eagle Gun Range in Lewisville allows 50 cal. Beowolf & AE, but not 50 cal. BMG.

Re: DFW FMJ Ranges?
Am going to try the Fossil Pointe range in Decatur next week. Thanks for the info. Elm Fork is a good range but I don't care for the 'dust cloud' that drifts over the 100-yd shooting benches when a vehicle enters/leaves the facility.
Quail Creek range is at I-35W/FM 1171 near Roanoke/Argyle and is a good range for 100-yd. No FMJ, etc. Well run and well maintained. Have been going there for years. http://www.quailcreekrange.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (am not affiliated with it)
