It takes a while to develop those skills but one way is to start shooting IPSC and/or IDPA with the pistol you carry and have for home defense.
Rarely are the scum trained or practiced and the few instances I've heard of where IPSC competitors were faced with armed assailants it was no real contest. Bad guys went down fast.
You do have to be able to get your hands on something as soon as the door is hit, tho. And you do have to practice very frequently (practice involving much more than standing still and shooting).
