Austin Technology Incubator
Does anyone know whether the Austin Technology Incubator (http://ati.utexas.edu/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) would be considered a campus for the purpose of CHL? It isn't actually on campus, but it is considered part of the University of Texas. It is actually housed in ...

Re: "Legal Heat" Smart Phone App
It is a pity that GPS is not more accurate, such that it could tell what building you were at or about to enter. It would be neat to have an app that would buzz when you were about to go into a location where carrying is not allowed. As an aside, I do some side-work in developing Android apps. If an...

Re: CHL Licensing Section of DPS Destroying the CHL
Fingerprinting would be a good add-on to one of those places that does packing, shipping, copies, etc. You could just let people walk-in and get their fingerprints done. If your enrollers are good, then you can do a whole enrollment in less than five minutes. However, remember that L-1, by law, has ...

Re: Man kills himself during CCW class!!
"Initially the call came in that the gun had been dropped and went off , but the trajectory of the bullet did not match up," said the sheriff. I hate when people do this. Also, I don't really understand the exercise, but if you were totally new to it, why would you do this with live rounds?

BG calls 911 because homeowner might have a gun
This one made me chuckle: http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/03/08/oregon.intruder.911/index.html?npt=NP1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Chapek locked himself in the bathroom and made an emergency call, police said. He said he had broken into the house, the owner had come home, ...

Re: Fingerprints
O.K. Fella's Got the call this morning and the fingerprints were all ready rejected. Only took three day's I was impressed. Going to get them redone this Thursday drinking plenty of water and using Cornhusker's lotion. Any more suggestion's? Wish me luck. Tell them that you have tough fingerprints ...

Virgina police talk about response to "Man with a gun"
This is a discussion from VA police about how they respond to "man with a gun" calls. I thought it was kind of interesting (but long). It is Virginia, not Texas, but I think a lot of the key elements translate. Virginia does allow open-carry, so keep that in mind. http://vaguninfo.com/vide...

Re: Fingerprints
There are a lot of different definitions of "retained" I know military fingerprints are kept in a database at the FBI, but are never searched expect in very, very special circumstances. Teacher fingerprints are deleted. To a certain extent, it is in the FBI's best interest to try to keep i...

Re: Fingerprints
I'm surprised they don't want DNA these days. :???: DNA tests are about $100 each. However, DNA is much more effective in a forensics application, because it is easy to leave DNA at a crime scene. For identification, which is what the CHL check is all about, there is nothing that can beat fingerpri...

Re: Fingerprints
Estimates vary, but about .5%-2% of the population do not have "usable" fingerprints. Sometimes it is because of your job (masonry work is a big one) and sometimes it is just genetic. However, you do have some distinguishing features on your fingers, guaranteed. You just don't have the nor...

Re: CHL Licensing Section of DPS Destroying the CHL
I've worked in biometrics (fingerprints, face, and iris) for the past seven years, and crossed paths with L-1 several times during my career. I've written programs that convert paper fingerprint cards to electronic records, and deployed the software to Iraq, Afghanistan, and several other countries,...

Re: CHL requirements
Actually, this raises an interesting question. How close are the Texas CHL fees to the actual cost of processing? I know DL fees are much lower, but there is no background check involved with those. With a CHL, there is a federal background check, plus some other database checks, plus processing a b...

Re: Carrying Concealed on a Military base in Oklahoma
I'm not sure if this is still true, but when I lived on a military base I was not able to keep a weapon in my home either. I had to check it in to the security police for the entire time I lived there. I could check it out to go target shooting, but that is about it.
Kind of ironic, IMHO.

Re: CHL Scenario Training
My course certainly covered the ins and outs of when you can use deadly force, but it was just words. It leaves me wondering whether I really have all that internalized such that I will do the right thing when it counts. I used to teach skydiving, and we had a similar situation where there were a va...
