What a long lived thread. Maybe my third post here...what fun.
In the early 90's I bought a 1930's Walther PP (32 cal) to carry in my pocket. I figured if it was good enough for the german police in the 30's it was good enough to protect me in the 90's.
That was 20 yrs ago and time and technology marches on. It was and still is reliable but today you can carry so much more power in the same form factor.
The small 380's are fine with me for now. I'm still looking at the 9mms in the same form factor....front pocket carry. I can imagine carrying one of them as a BUG one day.

Re: Should the 380 be discouraged as a CCW ?
Great points. May be better to carry Bear Spray to protect from human harm. Sort of fits this thread of 380 vs something bigger.Excaliber wrote:The Pepperblaster is designed for people, not for bears. The quantity of agent fired with each shot wouldn't give me much comfort when going up against a big bruin, and it holds only two shots which may not be enough against a large animal.fulano wrote:Wow!! This would be better than "Bear Spray" for hiking in the back country. For sure it would be easier to aim than those dumb cans that look like spray paint or a mini fire extinguisher. Thanks for the info.Excaliber wrote: Since you asked: Pepperblaster II by Kimber.
Folks with debilitating physical conditions need solutions customized to their individual needs, but their limitations shouldn't be used to draw conclusions on what's best for those not so afflicted.
A detailed discussion of that topic would properly be addressed in a different dedicated thread.
There's a reason for carrying those "fire extinguisher" units - they hold lots more agent that allow you to hose down a moving bear to achieve the effect you need.

Took my old VW bug to a local garage once for an easy repair and when I got it back I noticed the heads of several bolts were rounded off.

Re: Should the 380 be discouraged as a CCW ?
More men probably own 380's then women because more men own guns but IMO I think you might find that the 380 is carried by more women then men (as a percentage of women's ccw).
My wife can "shoot" any gun I have but her current weapon of choice is a 380. For years she used a 38 S&W 5 shot wheel gun as her house weapon. After the motorist protection act passed, she went to the range renting/shopping with some buddetts and came home with a PK380. In the past she had no interest in a CHL but now that the little SA is a companion in the car she has been talking CHL.
For me, I'd rather her carry something than to argue about what to carry; a strategy of "being right" don't work between husbands and wives :-)
