...it's true that people can change...youthful attitudes change...my son has a large word tattoed across the base of his neck...in front, no less...I find it disgusting...he got it when he was 18...since then, he's married, joined the Army, served in Iraq, is a father soon to be father again...and works at a civilian job on an AFB...at 18, you'd have never dreamed he was headed where he is today...but he still has the tat and has to wear tight-necked Tshirts and high collars...didn't get this job "sporting" his tat, for sure...and he's making more than I ever have...
...when you meet a stranger, everything you see is all you know about him...then how he talks, if he looks you in the eye, posture...tone of voice and choice of words...you build your opinion of him as new info becomes available...when you knock on the door to try to make a living...look sharp...act sharp...the person whose money you'd like some of may just not care about your "making a statement"...and if you're there to make a sale, it's not important that he be exposed to all your personal stuff...

...I believe in the individual right to self-expression...be it long hair or beard or tattooes...clean and neat counter that a lot...some will sniff at you because your shirt-tail's out...but in the business world...you either care what your customers think...or they'll do business with someone who does...and that makes for different amounts of change for different client/customer target groups...
...the road I've travelled...I draw the line at dirty...not WORK-dirty...but unkempt dirty...and when I see the tats, I notice the attitude...some of those inky dudes have risked their life for you and me...

...common sense would say to park the truck (marked clearly) in front of the house you were working at...have a uniform shirt and clearly marked hardhat...which you could read through the peephole...but that'd be too easy...
...your precautions were wise...glad it turned out to be legit...and so is HE...but he'll never know just how much...

Re: Door To Door Solicitor Today
...new scam afloat...last night I'm in the kitchen and see a guy headed up my driveway with a clipboard and an ID hanging from his belt...I go to the door and wait till he raps...he's cleancut and white...nice shirt and shorts...no tattooes...has a permit from the city which he's happy to show me...after he said "This is not about sales"
...his shirt says Honeywell security systems...begins to tell me that Honeywell's looking to do some advertising in my neighborhood...he wants to put a couple of Honeywell signs in my yard...I ask him what Honeywell is and he tells me the company's history...I finally interrupt him and tell him that now they're into security systems..."Well, yes, they are"...I ask him why anyone would want to put their signs in our front yard...and he says "Because I'm going to give you over $2000 worth of security equipment at no cost..." I'll save the mods the trouble and not post my reply...I told him there's gotta be a hook...where's the money change hands..."No, you don't pay a dime"...I said that if he lied to me again he was gone...
...he said that all I had to do was to sign an agreement to pay the police and fire dept. monitoring fees...to shorten the story...you set it up...pay for monitoring for XXX months...and it's yours...of course, if you terminate the monitoring, you'll owe for the equipment...he can only offer it to four homes in a neighborhood...etc., etc.
...I told this sharp, articulate 26-year old college degree in Business-type gentleman that nasty-handed working folks would respond better to an honest, straight-out approach rather than the scam story...gave him a bottled water and granola bar and liberal portion of Off... and sent him on to find his four lucky homeowners...
...if they'd just tell it straight...they'd earn some respect, get more business...and save all of us a lot more time...this guy was better than the spiel they sent him out with...he was as good as the Cutco guy...except for the story...they're not all thugs...but that don't mean they're honest...

I'm still not sure if that is legal or not.
...totally legal in Texas...but there goes your element of surprise...and a heartily rebuffed soliciter could say "He pulled a gun on me"...better if they never see the gun in your hand...in your holster might be too slow...read a few home invasion stories and you'll see that they happen fast and rough...READY is the key when you open the door...or stand near it...keep in mind if they kick it in, it only takes one good kick and you could wake up with a black eye from the door...I always look out the peephole with my foot wedged against the door...

Campers are basically all good people. We had to call the real law (Sheriff - 45 miles away) once last summer on a looney single woman from Kalifornia. So far, my steely-eyed, soft spoken, polite but direct and friendly demeanor has maintained order among the potential troublemakers. I sincerely hope that neither of us Texas CH licensees ever have to shoot one or more of 'em. OMG, the paperwork...

Re: Door To Door Solicitor Today
...neat...but to be effective, it will need to be printed in English and Spanish(for starters)
...it will have to be expressed in symbols, for those who can't read...
...and then the guy from the state sales tax office shows up.............

...thanks for staying involved...too many crimes happen where folks ignore the warning signs and "don't get involved"...it is truly "us against them"...law-abiding citizens against those who ignore the law...and may or may not be citizens...

...young man at almost dark Mon night...dogs woke me up and I stumbled to the door...he was standing on the porch with his box of candy and cookies...just staring at me...I'd put him at 16 or 17...he didn't say anything so I said "No, Son, I don't want anything...you're supposed to have a permit knocking doors out here." his reply: "I ain't sellin' nuthin'..." as he walked away...and knocked on the two vacant houses with knee-high grass across the street...sad...

Re: Door To Door Solicitor Today
...it's not about appearance nearly as much as demeanor...I probably have 2 or 3 a month at my door...I've had slick-dressers be rude and pushy(not for long) and had tattoed, ring-in-nose old clothes types be polite and respectful, even when I said no to their spiel and their product...we get kids, kids with Mom, 50s men wanting yard work to do...dolls and dogs...and some of them are good folks just trying to make a living...but in all those groups, our experiences with the actions of one predispose us as how to deal with the next one of that type...I go through a lot of cold bottled water in the summer...don't abuse them...and don't tolerate abuse...it's kinda like when your teenager rolls his eyes at you...actions speak louder than words...and different, more mature actions often get a better response...
...leaving out the wanted ones(which I've had arrested) and those scouting a crime or trying to be home invaders...
...the ones trying to make a living, no matter their looks...dress...skin art...or whatever...would do well to practice common respect and good manners...and be quick to take no for an answer and thank us for our time...
...I've sold door to door for several companies...always gave respect...always got it...
