Re: Church Volunteer Security Groups

I go to a mid-size church that doesn't bring in a whole lot of money, we can't afford extra insurance so forming our own security company isn't going to happen, we have to pay for a police officer on weeks we know we are going to be busy. It's ridiculous we can't form a security committee and protect our own church, so we don't have a security committee.

there are certain laws I hate - those that really only benefit a particular industry or two, fall into that category....personally, I think those are probably unconstitutional, not sure though.

Re: Church Volunteer Security Groups

Charles L. Cotton wrote:{snip}

Failing to allow a vote on HB2535 is a mistake that diminishes public safety rather than promote it, arguments by the security industry notwithstanding. It is currently legal for CHLs to carry their self-defense handguns in church, unless the church posts a 30.06 sign. Very few post such signs and there are many tens of thousands of Texas CHLs carrying handguns in church every Sunday as well as other days. Texas law allows all citizens to use deadly force to protect not only themselves but also third persons, regardless of the location. If there is an assault on church-goers, then it is highly likely that an armed CHL will intervene to protect innocent people, and their actions will be perfectly legal and justified.

So what is gained by current law that prohibits armed CHLs from participating in volunteer security teams? Absolutely nothing, they still can and will intervene to protect innocent people and they will do so with whatever skills, training and education they possess. The more vulnerable the victims (children, the elderly, women), the greater the likelihood multiple people will intervene. Current Texas law diminishes public safety by denying churches the ability to coordinate security volunteers. The lack of coordination not only reduces operational efficiency, it increases the likelihood of accidental injury or death. This holds true for the military, law enforcement, and even one's own family. This is one reason why the military and law enforcement train and drill and why every family should have and practice both fire and intruder drills.

If HB2535 had passed, then churches could coordinate their volunteers and perhaps even obtain outside training from LEOs. They could notify their congregations of their volunteer security personnel and perhaps even establish an overall intruder plan to better prepare not only the volunteers on the security team, but the entire congregation as well. There is no downside to coordination; it can only improve safety. Not allowing HB2535 to come up for a vote was a very big mistake. Let's all pray that it does not become a tragic mistake.

Chas.
this is exactly what I have been trying to say for several months, thank you sir! you worded it so much better than I ever have!
because of this law, my husband feels unable to lead or server on our parking lot ministry.
Our church would be considered a mid/large church, but is probably lower income, we can't afford a security officer except on Christmas, and he might have even been a volunteer then, I believe he was a member.

Re: Church Volunteer Security Groups

here's the question: why should a church, say a smallish to mid-size but is low-income that wants to have some security, not allowed to? even though they have CHL's in their membership? The state says they have to spend their dollars on getting security licenses for their CHL members...that's a tax...that's illegal. OR they have to hire off-duty cops how is that right? The $ need be spent paying the youth pastor so security doesn't happen in an organized manner.

Re: Church Volunteer Security Groups

:iagree:

the Bible says to take care of the widows, children and others who can't take care of themselves...take a look around your church, if you don't have them in your church, you're going to the wrong church

Re: Church Volunteer Security Groups

depends on how you read it....

some say parking lot "greeters" is not ok, others say it's not;
everyone agrees that any committee that has the word "security" on it is apparently not ok;

I tend toward the first group when it comes to parking lot greeters, you're directing traffic and saying hi, at least in my small church, our group is not asked to stay out for the whole service. (In our large church in CO it was a different job, but it was a different law, too)

TXPhidelt817 wrote:Personally, I carry at church. When I renewed my CHL a few months back, the Fort Worth officer that taught the class was very firm in his stance that church carry was illegal. I argued my opinion on how the PC reads but it only fell on deaf ears. The way I read the PC is that it is only illegal if the building is posted 30.06.

After the class, I reached out to a friend that is a Tarrant County DA who said that its illegal but that he had never prosecuted anyone under any similar charges.

What nonsense are they reading that I am not?

they're lazy, and you're not :totap:

they don't care, and you do :banghead:

Re: Church Volunteer Security Groups

to answer what these people do....well, in a largish church in CO Springs, post New Life, we would walk the halls, we might catch teens, um, hiding out. we might work the parking lot during our night-time VBS and keep an eye on a van that kept driving through, discovered it was just a parent of a sleepy baby, but I'll tell you I got the guys up there by the 3rd drive through :eek6 We might keep watch out for a non-custodial parent, who had made a threat, and didn't show up :thumbs2: but we were prepared, one of the guys was an off-duty officer that night and mom was able to go to prayer group and relax for a while. We might just keep traffic flowing, not always easy in a busy church parking lot.
