From the perspective of a third party, it appears that you did not feel threatened enough to call 911, but you drew your gun on this guy. The fact that you drew it from the holster and made it visible to him amounts to pulling the gun on him. Regardless of whether you intended for him to see it, you drew it in response to verbal provocation alone.
I don't know why they call it a homicide case, unless they just mean that their homicide detectives handle such cases.

My rule of thumb, as I teach my students, is that any time my gun gets involved in any way, I need to call 911 immediately.
