Don't confuse the federal gun free school zone with the speed limited school zone you have to drive through. Under the federal rule it is a matter of proximity to the school, not a crosswalk safety issue. A CHL will exempt you if you are near a school which is located in a state in which your CHL was issued. You can drive through a Texas school parking lot, armed, with a Texas CHL, but don't go to Oklahoma and drive through a school parking lot with your Texas license. You have now violated federal law.
