"Paranoid" is the correct term, because this is a scenario not worth worrying about. If the Bat-boys come calling on a firearms trace, all one needs to do is say "I sold the gun".

This is a KEY QUESTION.

Federal firearms law does not allow a private citizen to private citizen firearms transfer when the two people reside in different states. If your friend is not a Texas resident, a handgun sale must go through an FFL in the purchaser's home state. (A long gun sale must go through an FFL in either state unless the other state has state law forbidding it.)
