Re: Any preppers on here or other survival minded people?

IMO 2012 goes in the same file that Y2K went in. I’m more worried about hyperinflation and our economy. This article from Forbes leads me to think stocking up now can save me money later:

http://blogs.forbes.com/greatspeculatio ... gechannels" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I can remember the 70’s when I believe the President froze prices because of runaway inflation.

Living in Hutto, well it seems the power goes out during every rain and Hermine had us cooking with a Coleman stove for two days. Not knowing when the power would come back on was a pain. I can only imagine what would happen if the power stayed off for a week. Would there be looting? Would I be forced to protect my family and property? Who knows? But I’m prepared. I'm glad I don’t live in places where they will riot over professional sports but society does seem to be more volatile now days.

I would love to be self sustaining. Two years ago I bought 83 acres in the South Park of Colorado. I have a 20 x 10 cabin on it, a lake ½ mile away and big horn sheep eating outside my door. The cabin is a work in progress as it’s not cost effective for utilities to be available, however, the wind never stops there and my neighbors all have solar panels and turbines. I was working on a rain/snow containment system when I was informed that all water that falls on my land belongs to the state of Colorado??? Slight snag there be it’s a small tax to catch the water. The cabin is a nice place to vacation and I love panning for gold, fishing and a bit of hunting but it would also work as a last resort.

In all, the Boy Scout motto is correct be prepared and I agree with the Annoyed man, don’t go overboard with it.

Re: Any preppers on here or other survival minded people?

I applied for my CHL because I was preparing for the need to protect my family and self. In that respect perhaps we are all preppers. Many people can go through their entire lives and never have a need to protect themselves. I’m just of the thought that I’d rather have a CHL and not need it than need it and not have it.

My food stores are in part due to my buying in bulk to save money and in part because I can all the vegetables that I grow in my garden. The dehydrator was for the backpacking and camping trips but I also like jerky and fruit chips, (crispy onions are my fav).

I have a water bladder for the bath tub from the Red Cross that I bought after the Flood at Canyon Lake in 2002. Our well water turned rusty and I decided it was a prudent investment.

I have bug out bags and a small tool box in all of my vehicles as well as water, spare oil and a tire repair kit.

My family knows that if something happens that will prevent us from getting home or home has become unsafe, we are to meet at another predetermined location and we all have the number of an out of state relative.

IMO, the precautions I’ve taken are just common sense. Now if something really bad happens, I do not want to watch my family slowly starve to death because I didn’t plan ahead. I don’t want anything to happen as I like my life and comforts the way they are but I’m not going to give up on my family if it does.

Re: Any preppers on here or other survival minded people?

Prepping doesn’t have to be for an apocalyptic occurrence, it can also be just preparing for the little things such as my family losing our source of income. I’m not Mormon but I do like one of their teachings that is something like, ‘No man should allow himself to become a burden on another while he is still able’. If I lose my job, I have the food, supplies and set aside the means to support my family without sucking up unemployment, welfare, food stamps ect. I believe if more people did prepare we wouldn’t have a need for social programs funded out of my pockets.

I hope I’m not delusional to think that nothing can happen and everything will be taken care of. It’s my job to protect my family and set aside the things to insure their survival be it due to our economic situation, my death or some disaster, (natural or manmade). Only in the recent years has the average American’s mentality become the ‘just run to the store’ attitude. In the 50’s people would stock up. Now we just buy big cars, big houses and TV’s and not even think about being responsible or practicable.

I don’t need a tin foil hat to see that our country is broke and the repercussions that can occur from this. So I chose to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Note: I've edited this post to remove guns from the list as it sounded like I'm anti-gun.

Re: Any preppers on here or other survival minded people?

I've been prepping for a while now and I'm approx 70% set. My father came from the post depression era and always had ½ years of food and supplies on hand. When he died he passed on the tin foil hat to me.

I agree, odds are nothing will ever happen. Well, apart from hurricanes, tornados, drought, pandemic, pestilence, terrorist attacks, all out war, collapse of the monetary system or on a simpler note, everyone in my house losing their jobs to a bad recession and needing food. After Katrina and Rita, I have little faith in anyone coming to my rescue for a long time. So I do have bug out bags in each vehicle, a year’s worth of food stored, and weapons for the protection of myself and family. I’m also an outdoorsy type with plenty of camping gear, trained in wilderness medicine, canning and storage of food and I make really good beer and wine.

I also agree that some of those preparers are as far out there as some of those gun people.

I have often had doubts about my reasons for prepping because everyone knows the government will provide for us.

On a serious note, like my CHL, I keep all this to myself and never let anyone know I’m prepping. I also know if it really happens, I can’t do it alone so I’ll PM you and we’ll compare the gauges of our foil.
