Re: Were you one of the first?
I worked for the Airlines and was in Miami, FL when I read in USA Today that the TX CHL law had finally passed. Though born/raised in TX, I had gone to College and worked in FL from 1982-1992 and the FL CHL and "MPA type" laws really spoiled me. When I got back to TX in 1992, being able to carry only a shotgun/rifle in a vehicle made me feel "naked." I recall getting the small post card at my LGS and mailing it to Austin. After a short wait, getting that large, brown, numbered packet. I was able to get into one of the first CHL classes on 8 OCT 1995. Classroom was taught at a local hotel, then qualification at the LGS range the next day. Also, "old school" Polaroid passport photos, ink finger-prints, tons of forms and Notary stamps, etc. I recall photo-copying the entire stack of documents, then off to the 24-hour Airport Post Office for USPS Money Order and confirmed-receipt mail to Austin... then waiting. I too got my CHL # 6407, late in 1995, but unable to use it until 1 JAN 1996. Due to FL years, I still had cover garments, holsters, belts for both a Beretta 92FS and S&W Centennial 442 and it felt great being able to carry again after a long 4 year gap! I remember the illegal "gun buster" signs at "Blockbuster Video" (yes still back in the VHS days) and taking our business elsewhere. Also, due to the initial AWB of 1994, I remember the "Baby Glocks" etc being introduced and being able to find more and more CHL/carry gear at my LGS and not having to search for LEO type stores. Also the internet had taken off yet, so finding information except via magazine and LGS shop-talk was a challenge. Glad TX finally got on board. God Bless TX!
