Caution, a few mild curse words (relating to female dogs and donkey/derriere).

Although I'm sure it's nothing extraordinary, his direct statement that the US and Britain are paying off the Pakistanis in order to keep the nukes locked away brought to mind an interesting parallel.

Emperor Theodosius II, who reigned from 408-450, oversaw two key decisions that allowed the Eastern Roman Empire to flourish for a millennium while the Western Roman Empire just 150 miles away ended up in ruins. Those decisions were to build the Theodosian walls to protect the empire and to buy off the Huns to keep them from attacking. Hindsight being 20/20, historians agree that the decision to buy off the Huns was a vital component of the strong leadership which allowed Byzantium to become so powerful over the following centuries.

I think the parallels to the US today are remarkable.

Re: *Breaking* Bin Laden is Dead

It's highly unlikely that he has been dead for years and they are now pretending that they killed him. The Pakastanis, Al Qaeda, the women with him, and everyone else knows if he's alive or not and wouldn't let Obama pull this off without calling him on the carpet about a several years discrepancy in death dates.

Reasons they would dump the body include the fact that they didn't dump it but needed a story to cover where they took it, that a forensic examination would show evidence they didn't want public, or that some part of the process didn't go according to plans. If I were to believe one of those reasons, I'd be inclined to believe the middle one as reports are now indicating that UBL was unarmed and assassinated with no attempt to take him into custody alive.

:iagree: Yes, and I commend him.

I found it interesting in the article that I linked that it said that there was a safer way of taking him out by air strikes, but Obama specifically wanted a higher risk attack that put our most elite soldiers in hand-to-hand combat with Usama (I'm changing to that spelling to avoid sounding like a Mother Goose type tongue-twister) because Obama wanted the body to be able to prove it was Usama. I'm following the logic up to here as I can understand why that could be important. It almost blew up in his face with the SEALs losing their transportation out and having to stay in the compound with some 15-20 angry and grieving women and children. But everyone said that having his body to prove it was the real deal would be important for the Arab world, so OK. But then they dump him overboard within 12 hours before anyone can verify the body? I'm not starting a conspiracy or thinking that it wasn't Usama. Al Qaeda would know and would have him all over the news within hours if it wasn't true. But it just isn't consistent and doesn't make sense to authorize a high-risk attack with massive intercountry political implications (Pakistan is now strongly saying they were informed and involved in order to not look like fools and to minimize backlash) in order to be able to show off his body, then to dump his body where no one can recover it before showing it off. Huh?

Also very interesting to me is the tweets by the Pakistani guy. He hears a helicopter and is told it isn't Pakistani, so he immediately assumes it is Taliban and doesn't seem at all concerned about that. It's only when the helicopter isn't Pakistani OR Taliban that his suspicions are raised. The place must have been crawling with Taliban for him to make such a casual assumption!

Re: *Breaking* Bin Laden is Dead

Here's a pretty detailed account. It doesn't claim DNA as identification, but facial recognition software.
