Re: Academy,1/31-2/6/2010. Taurus PT-101, .40, $299.99. Limi

The Academy in Lafayette, LA ran these as their Black Friday special the day after Thanksgiving. I missed that sale, but they ran it again the week before Christmas, so I bought one. $324 out of the door. I am new to this forum (from LA) but I saw where someone asked for opinions on the performance.
I was able to directly compare this pistol to two others that were purchased last Fall. 1) A Glock 20 10mm with Nite Sights, that I purchased a Lone Wolf 40S&W barrel for and 2) A Springfield Armory XD-M in 40S&W that my son purchased. We ran a couple hundred rounds of various factory/handloads through each pistol at Barney's indoor range in December.
My observations:
1) I have small hands. The Taurus' big fat double stack is the least comfortable to grip of the three, but very close to the Glock. The XD-M came with three interchangeable backstraps; the most comfortable pistol I ever held.
2) Accuracy: This Taurus PT101-P shoots groups. Smalll Groups. Just as good or even better than the XD-M. Glock was okay, but not even close to the other two.
3) Dependability: The XD-M was perfect. No malfunctions of any kind; BUT so was the Taurus. I fired the Glock with the only 10mm available, ammo I loaded on my Dillon RL550B. Stovepiped on the second round. Averaged about 1 failure per EACH magazine. I switched to the Lone Wolf barrel and tried factory and handloaded 40S&W. My son loved this...heavy 10mm spring allowed the first eject to NAIL me in the middle of the forehead, the rest passsed uncomfortably close to my face. Fewer jams, but still had a couple.
4) For handloaders...the Glock feedramp is cut from the chamber. "Unsupported chamber" leaves a pregnant bulge just foreward of the casehead. To reload it must be run through a "push-through" sizer, or "roll sized". Just something else to tick me off about the Glock.
5) Final thoughts: Would not buy the Glock...not happy at all with it. The XD-M is a work of art; the pistol pack looks like a real Pelican case, with all the accessories. Nice..I have actually called SA and begged them to make one in .45 ACP. The Taurus came in a cardboard box, one extra mag and the cleaning brush, nothing fancy. The XD-M cost my son $630, while the Taurus was almost half that. My only regret is that I did not buy 2 of the PT101-P's while they were on sale.
