I served 23 years (14 active, 9 RR), and couldn't tell you if any modern soldier was in "proper" uniform or not. Army uniforms especially have changed dramatically since my time. As for sun glasses, when I was Infantry I don't recall the policy, but they were rare, if allowed at all, in uniform. In my Army aviator days though, Ray Bans were a "must" as one had to maintain the proper "image"chabouk wrote:I couldn't tell if someone is wearing current Army uniforms correctly, or not. They have changed considerably from my time in the service (when I joined, we were transitioning from 501 to BDU). Now they have the digital/ACU/whatever, and the green Class A is about to go away in favor of Army Blue.
One huge change is sunglasses: in my day, they were strictly prohibited while in uniform. Now you see soldiers wearing them all the time. And the policy on headgear has either changed, or just isn't enforced.

Re: Question on open carry for U.S. Military in Texas...
One thing about Military Police, that I don't think is an issue relating to the OP. Military Police (except CID, who are the equivalent of MP detectives) wear uniforms clearly indicating they are police. An MP arm band, and an MP on the helmet liner. Yes, they carry off post, but only on duty as I recall. The Op stated, "The Soldier said he was "Spec-ops," (or Special Forces) and was required to carry his side-arm at all times." A military brat, as she calls herself, would clearly know an MP on duty was allowed to be armed IMHO. This "Special Forces" statement should have raised a huge red flag and should have been acted upon as many have said.srothstein wrote:CID carries off post all the time since their patrol area is usually counties wide and they have to check all the school ROTC units and the recruiter stations too.bronco78 wrote:No commander I've met, known, read about, seen, heard about is out there authorizing his (her) Soldiers to take a military weapon off post in open carry.. their are no military duties to be discharged in such a manner as far as my 24 years of service can come up with.
And the commander of the Armed Forces Police Detachment in San Antonio has all of his men open carry off post. They are in uniform, on patrol around the city, and based out of the city police headquarters. They were very helpful when we had a situation involving an active duty service member.
So, there definitely are military personnel open carrying off post. Most are in uniform, but some are in civilian clothes. The civilian clothes people usually carry concealed, but, like many cops, they get lax about putting their jackets back on every so often.

No problem Dragonfighter. I guess I just used too much bold face to emphasize military ops in civies, and no excitement was intended. I guess it's best left out of this thread/forum.

Re: Question on open carry for U.S. Military in Texas...
I still want to know who are these military personnel, other than military criminal investigative personnel, who are running around the U.S. in civilian clothes on duty and off base? Also, Dragonfighter, what counter-insurgency operations are taking place in the U.S.? I'm not addressing FBI or any other policing agencies, I'm talking military personnel. Also, in overseas combat theaters, military personnel conducting operations in anything other than military uniforms is a violation of the Geneva Convention IIRC. If they are covert in civies, they should not be military (CIA perhaps). Set me straight.

Yes, but CID investigates "within" the military, as police. I'm not familiar with counter insurgency forces within the US. Can you elaborate as to their role?Dragonfighter wrote:CID, counter insurgency et al are all "special operations" that do not wear uniforms as a matter of course.

Thanks for validating my memory.bronco78 wrote:..lol.. you’re not that far gone.G26ster wrote:Boy, I must be really old. Someone please bring me up to date.
I'm active duty now and have been for the preceding 24 years, all as a grunt. It's the same now as it was as you remember it.
When did Special Operations troops become "undercover police" by not wearing uniforms? Seems "civies" while on duty takes you out of the military role. Doesn't the Geneva Convention prohibit that? I have to assume that when he is out of uniform, he is off duty.stroo wrote:My son in law is Marine Special Operations. He doesn't wear a uniform except when he has to.
