Some people don't want to know what goes on around them. It's easier to stick one's head in the sand, then blame the problems on an inanimate object.
I'm having this problem with my sister. I've even tried sharing information with her about what goes on in the Dallas area (I don't live there, but I've read the news articles). She asserts that she doesn't live in Dallas because it's "bad", and that her little suburb is nice and they don't have any crime there.
I've backed off b/c I can tell she's completely shutting me out; however, others have used reason with a greater degree of success.
