Re: Road Rage WWUD?

The bottom line is that if you are a LEO with a citation book, you can write tickets for violations of statutes. If you're not a uniformed LEO, strangers typically do not appreciate driving lessons, even if the lessons are free and delivered with appropriate gestures.

Call me preachy, but this is where the "sheepdog" mentality goes off the rails.

I've called in apparent drunk drivers a few times. Other than that, live and let live.

Re: Road Rage WWUD?

My policy: If the confrontation is terminated by the departure of either or both parties, let it go. As I already said somewhere, if you want to rid the world of evil, get a divinity degree.

The road rage idiot eventually will go after a gangster who will kill him without blinking, or an off-duty or plain-clothes cop with the obvious result.

Buenos dias, amigo ;-) .

There's nothing like a good rant in the morning. BTW, if I sleep until my alarm clock goes off at 6, I might be sick. I was out this morning admiring the just-past-full moon and the sun rising over the Pleasure Pier. It's a beautiful day, thank God.

I wish everyone a happy Easter. If you don't celebrate Easter, there is always Passover or whatever pagan festival you may honor. I'm ecumenical.

Re: Road Rage WWUD?

You put the headlights on when it's dark (or in a funeral procession). You put the wipers on when it's raining.

The only legal use of the horn is to immediately avoid a collision. It's not to wake up the neighborhood or otherwise express anger. It's not a substitute for going to the door for lazy people.

I don't even know if the horn on my car still works. I think they check it at inspection.

While I'm on a well-earned rant (not having a traffic ticket since 1982), this stuff about "breaking the law" seems rather subjective. The speed limit is a law. Inspection stickers, insurance, registration, and license plates are laws. They are not that hard to conform to. If you don't like them, write to your state representatives.

It's everywhere.

There is a perpetual traffic jam on I-45 south of Houston, around Scarsdale (for those who know the area). Everyone driving south from downtown or the airport runs into it. One day I rolled to a stop behind 10,000 vehicles, and this white yuppie-looking woman in the car behind me was literally screaming and gesturing with both middle fingers, while not bothering to steer. What did she think that was going to change? There are more cars and trucks than concrete. Deal with it.

I had a road-rage incident with a passenger in a car in Galveston, who was literally hanging out the window and screaming obscenities because (in his opinion) I turned on my turn signal too late. He was obviously either drunk or out of his mind, or both. The driver, to give him credit, was ignoring the goofball. He looked rather embarrassed.

I was born in Chicago and learned to drive there.

I experienced more violent road rage, including people trying to open my car doors and throwing beer cans at me (what IQ does that require?) in Chicago than in the entire rest of my life and travel on three continents.

They could save a lot of money if they stopped repainting the lane stripes, because no one pays attention to them. Ditto with the speed-limit signs.

Re: Road Rage WWUD?

Why do people feel like driving a motor vehicle is some life-or-death struggle for survival?

I know, that's a philosophical, rhetorical question.

You have to get from point A to point B. You have to share the road with other drivers. People make mistakes. Most of the time, they cause no damage. Deal with reality.

To answer the original question, if you shoot at an unarmed person because he is frothing at the mouth and cursing, you will spend your life savings on legal fees. If you display a weapon without shooting, he will suddenly become an offended upstanding citizen who was simply going to Bible study when you threatened him.

Take care. Stay safe. Your most effective weapon is behind your eyeballs.
