Re: Don't tell everybody!!

Kalel wrote:Guess I just see it diffferently. I do not see any reason that we should be afraid to discuss the topic and show support.
It's not a question of being afraid.

There are many things that civilized people do not discuss outside their immediate family and trusted counselors, for example, their medical issues, finances, sex life, or marital problems.

It is prudent to avoid discussing certain topics in certain situations. In particular, since most people need to work for a living, it is prudent to avoid doing something that puts one's job or livelihood at risk without good reason. Jawboning about something controversial that is not related to work is no way to advance your career.

It's simply polite and good sense to avoid stirring up controversy among relatives or in-laws.

You don't need a license for free speech, but you also don't need a license to make yourself look like

Kalel wrote:This topic points out a flaw our society and how we have been conditioned to think. Concealed means concelaed I get that as far as the law goes. But, by saying we should not tell anyone we have our license: are we then not promoting that what we are doing is an aboration and is not nor should not be accepted by society in general?

If we do not talk to folks about it, how do you promote your right to carry? ...
There is a time and place for everything (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8).

I talk to anyone who seems interested. (I even carry business cards from a CHL instructor that I recommend.) I correct people when they say something outrageously false (like "assault weapons" being machine guns). I've written letters to the editor when issues were in the legislature.

I try to avoid shocking people. It does no one any good to mention in a crowd that I'm carrying a loaded pistol on my hip right this minute, and getting the :eek6 reaction.

Maybe you can see it from the receiving end. My reaction to certain conversations ranges from annoyance to contempt. I've had people try to tell me where to worship, how to raise my kid, what to eat or not to eat, how to drive, etc. They did not persuade me.

The same thing happened to me. Whoever threw them away made sure to get them in with the coffee grounds and banana peels.

Dealing with obnoxious people in the office is a challenge. It is even more difficult when the obnoxious person can claim to feel threatened or sexually harassed.

Re: Don't tell everybody!!

You have no idea why the lady asked that her coworkers stop talking about firearms around her. Maybe one of her relatives blew his brains out and she found the corpse.

You just don't know.

Re: Don't tell everybody!!

There used to be a rule in polite society that the only purchases that one could talk about were a dog or a horse. I don't know why.

When I was a kid, if a man left a place and someone asked him where he was going, the answer was frequently, "To see a man about a dog." My late father (what's going on with this thread?) had a different answer that would not be politically correct these days.

Not many people buy horses these days, though I have made that mistake.

That seems to be the big stretch for a lot of people.

Funny, it never occurred to me to ask.

My late father and most of my older male relatives were the same way.

There's no telling how combat experience will affect a person's attitudes. I suspect somewhat more than 99% of this forum's participants have never been in combat or anything nastier than a fistfight, including myself.

Prudent.
It does tend to cut down on the celebrating we can do, though, so we have to do that on this forum....
That is one reason that this forum exists.

If you're still welcome at your parents' and in-laws' homes, I guess you're OK.

There are some sobering stories in the Never Again section. Coworkers seem to be the worst. If someone goes to the human resources department in a big company and complains about you, you have a problem.
