VERY simply, you can be as forthcoming or as stingy as you like with your personal information. The ONLY required info you 'must' provide (in Texas) is your name, address, and date of birth. And, that's only AFTER you've been arrested (Texas Penal Code 38.02).

Any time I've been stopped/ticketed (which is very few and far between), I simply say, "I do not wish to divulge any other personal information." They usually just put a dash in the space on the ticket/warning and move on.

And, I too just walk right past the receipt checkers at Frys, etc. I don't like the implication that, as a paying customer, I can't be trusted.
