Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

You might be surprised at all the laws congress exempts itself (or the whole federal government) from.

When they do that, it's proof positive they know it was a bad law. The 1985 homeland defense gun ban springs to mind.

I have no problem with paying them a reasonable salary when they're working but there should be no retirement benefits. They should get their retirement benefits from the private sector job they worked before/after their public service. That would also be a backdoor term limit. The problem is it would would be good for the country and bad for the politicians so it will never pass.
