Re: John Lott, author of "More Guns, Less Crime", coming to

Once again thank you everybody who donated to our cause. We will use these funds to support our upcoming projects, including the following:

*On-campus debate about campus carry
*Guest speaker who is currently doing a Ph.D at Colorado State (yes-carry school) who was at Virginia Tech during the massacre
*Group range day to introduce new shooters to firearms safety and shooting
*On-campus CHL class.

You guys rock!

Thank you guys so much for donating! I received $140 at the meeting. You guys rock!

I'm really beat right now so I'm going to turn in soon. We got the whole thing on video so expect this to be on youtube soon. Excellent lecture. Dr. Lott was kinda irritated that the local Federalist Society bailed, but overall it was good.

austinrealtor wrote:If I make it tonight, I'll pitch in some cash to help out. Really trying/hoping to make it now.

Also I'll do this ... anyone who contributes cash (at least $20?) toward this I'll give them half-price on their next CHL renewal or a new license class. Will have to get with Codename46 to figure out who contributed but will worry about logistics of that later.
Thank you so much for your support!!!!

They just now dropped their support? That's really low.
The national leadership of the Fed Society wants them to follow through with this, and that's what Dr. Lott wants too. However, local leadership is being skittish. I don't blame them. But we've done way too much logistical planning to cancel this. We're going to host this even if the room is too small. I have my CHL instructor looking for a larger room in a carry area but so far no luck. If any of you can help us out with this I would very much appreciate it. Since we lost support from the local Fed Society all the funding for food/drinks dropped as well, so as of right now I'm planning to pay for Dominoes out of my own pocket.
skydiver wrote:Anyone know how big the room is? I would suspect that this is going to draw a lot more attendance after today's events.
Unfortunately the room is pretty small. It can fit maybe 40-50. We're going to have to spill everything over to the main bookstore area and get a crapton of chairs.

Awfully close to PCL where this shooting took place, I assume there will be no problem accessing this area at 6 pm? Or do y'all know that for sure yet?
BNB has confirmed support for the event tonight.

Re: John Lott, author of "More Guns, Less Crime", coming to

The event is open to everyone. The School of Law is being bureaucratic and have been throughout the process. We will also be selling Students for Concealed Carry on Campus t-shirts for $10. Also there will be pizza.

Thanks everyone for their support.
CompVest wrote:I think it is great that the talk is being held in a "gun free zone". The college is allowing the event. This is another step in the right direction. More and more colleges are allowing more and more gun related activities such as the classroom portion of the CHL class and gun clubs. The more the message is heard on campus the more support generated for Campus Carry.
We hosted a CHL class on campus last semester and had 60 students and faculty members take the class. We are going to do it again next spring right when the Legislative session opens. If anyone has taken a class with a CHL Instructor named Michael Cargill, please thank him for all the support he's given us.

Unfortunately that will be the case. Sorry guys. If you think that's bad, imagine being a full-time college student with a CHL being unable to carry on almost a daily basis.
Truly, IMHO, a bone head move in the organizers part.
I applaud the work required (and likely cost) to get this speaker to an engagement with the intended audience. But the choice of venue that automatically alienates a major part of the demographics you want to attract seems misguided.

If holding this event in a location that specifically forbids the right to carry a concealed weapon was a planned , calculated part of the mission statement.. Then, well.. I guess you got what you wanted.. I truly hope you get the audience you wanted and folks benefit from the speaking engagement.
Though I was interested in coming up for this when I first read the thread.. Due to location of the venue, I’ll pass.
I respectfully disagree with your assessment.

There are very limited options in terms of venue location that is within walking distance from the UT campus, can accommodate approximately 100 people, and won't cost an arm and a leg to reserve (an "arm and a leg" in this case would be anything more than $50 since, as a grassroots organization, we get next to no funding). Why should it be held within walking distance? Because most of the students who live on campus don't have a car, and we wouldn't be allowed to advertise the event on any UT calendar if it is held at an off-campus location. We chose this location for logistical reasons.
