Kristi,
A plain old Walmart purse really won't hold up to the weight of a gun. What you are describing - ie: "a really good leather purse, well constructed, with a locking zippered pocket" is a Galco leather purse.
I used to carry a Coronado purse, and was very happy with it (sorry to hear of your bad experience) But when it started wearing, after ONLY 6 or 8 years of daily carry, I purchased a Galco. You can't beat Galco quality of construction, and the leather is just beautiful! But... beauty comes at a price. A steep one. But, I figure, if this one lasts like it looks like it will, I may never have to buy another one!
Good luck, and let us know what you decide on!

I think that most guys have no clue how difficult it is for a woman to carry and conceal in a waistband type holster.longtooth wrote:I equate purse carry for women in the same catagory as tucked for men. Not at all ideal but sometimes the only thing available.
Purse carry has its drawbacks, but it sure beats NO carry.

Flint, would you consider adopting me?flintknapper wrote: I told her I would buy her a pistol of her choosing, a concealment purse, a tactical light, any holster(s) she might be interested in, and pay for her CHL fees.
Seriously, a good concealment purse has a wide strap to support the added weight of a firearm without digging into your shoulder. The strap should also be adjustable so that the purse falls right at the waist. That way, it fits comfortably close to the body and it looks natural when you carry it with your hand inside the hidden pocket.
I have had a couple of purses from Coronado Leather. They look good and wear well. Galco also makes a great looking purse, but a little pricey, so I haven'y invested in one. Coronado sells online and has a catalog, but if you take her to a gun show, she can try some out.
Oh, and it helps to have the firearm first, before you pick out the handbag. I love my G19, but it's a tight fit in a purse.
