Sorry, the second renewal does require the class. At least that's what the DPS said when they sent me my notification.

2nd renewal - Took class on 9/15. Submitted paperwork on 9/18. Website said permit was mailed on 9/21. Received in the mail Thursday, 9/27. Overall took 9 days after I mailed it. I guess since they use your prior info, i.e. fingerprints and photos, that cuts down a whole bunch on wait time.
