jim, we cannot continue this discussion without at least set some agreement.
Let's just agree that we all need to know how to operate your gun.

YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO RUN THE GUN YOU GOT!
1. you cannot compare someone doing match with some Joe/Jane who just wants a gun at home. Nobody disagree that adequate training beats everything. Hell, if you do enough training, you don't even need a gun at home. You can just throw a silver coin to knock your intruder unconscious. Shooting a semi auto is simpler and requires less training - this is an indisputable fact, which was my point
2. Semi auto shoots faster and for the shooter, it's easier to keep the gun on target and do follow-up shots. Again, an indisputable fact. I used The Matrix to show how slow a person could operate the pump. Don't get too far about this.
3. The sound of racking a shotgun would scare someone away - of course it would. It would scare a whole lot of RATIONAL people away. Well, if a person is rational, s/he wouldn't break into your house in the dark, would s/he?
In a gun fight, I am not claiming I know anything because I don't, the first shot is often the key. You know one major reason why perps shot more accurate than police? Because bad guys often fired first! Before the policeman could have any reaction, his/her body would have already been filled with lead. Don't you ever give away the advantage of the surprise!!! Action beats reaction! You want to ambush the bad guy and stop him/her before any harm is done to you.

Re: Why a Home Defense Shotgun?
Modern semi-auto is not unreliable.fickman wrote: One problem. . . most semi-auto shotguns are unreliable during an actual emergency to cycle properly. They are sensitive to the ammo (need lots of recoil) and angle. I'd never trust one for life-and-death situations.
When using a pump:
1. your pumping sound gives away your position and might cause your target to fire at the sound
2. pump action requires rigorous practice so that under stress you wouldn't under-pump and jam your gun - this happens A LOT
3. when working with your pump action, without adequate practice, it moves your gun away from the target.
4. some may even forget to pump in the adrenaline high.
5. recoil is much worse than semi
6. follow up shots and speed of shooting are seriously impaired because of having to work with the pump. Given the choice, no self-respecting shooter would ever use a pump when shooting for speed. Watch any Skeet Shooting video on youtube.

Still don't believe me? Watch the movie The Matrix Lobby Shooting scene below. Should any of these police officers have used a semi-auto, Neo would be a piece of dead meat. Watch how slow the guy shooting the pump action shotgun.

Still not convinced? Just think hard about why all the armies of the world transited from single shot to bolt action, to semi-auto to full auto on their rifles. Why do they choose full auto over semi over single shot? Three reasons: speed of shooting, ability to keep the gun on target and simplicity of operating the semi and full auto action.

Re: Why a Home Defense Shotgun?
Because they are CHEAP.
As an arm-chaired non-commando, it is my professional opinion that a shotgun is a horrible weapon as home defense weapon of choice.
1. difficult to shoot - compared to AR15
2. low round count - compared to AR15
3. unable to make precision shots (buckshots, maybe with slugs) - compared to AR15
Oh, don't fall inlove with that Hollywood cliche about racking the shotgun. If you pump your shotgun and walk out of your bedroom to investigate some intruder, expect to be fired upon as the door opens!!!
For those who still like to use shotguns since having a gun is better than nothing, at least get semi-auto - there are many reasons why a semi-auto is so much better than a pump.
Shotgun is also a terrible choice in case of zombies, only slightly better than choosing a bolt action or single shot. For those creatures, the best of the best is GSG-5P, a magazine fed, 22LR semi-auto rifle. Why? when dealing with zombies, you need to take heat shots and you need ammo, LOTS ammo!!! A GSG would do the job right. A shotgun? After a few shots, you would be out of ammo and torn apart by zombies.
