I use ~2 table spoons of Dawn in my 17# tumbler and usually let them go 8-12 hours overnight. They get acceptably clean with less Dawn and less time but I like shiny stuff and the extra time makes them gleam.

FWIW - I decap, size and expand before placing them in the tumbler. After tumbling I apply home made case lube and run them 30-40 minutes in the 170 degree oven to dry.
I want to try the SS pins but there is no way I am spending 12 hours on brass. I decap and throw the brass in my ultrasonic for 30 minutes. I rinse the brass and dry them then tumble for a couple of hours and I'm done. FYI here is an easy and quick way of drying brass - get a hairdryer (it needs to be fairly good one) and throw a handful of brass into a cotton sock (it will actually melt the synthetic socks). Stick the hair dryer into the sock and turn on high for about 30-40 seconds, the brass will be too hot to hold and dry. It is the quickest way I have found to dry brass.
Blow dryer and a sock? I would have never thought of that! Necessity is the mother of invention.

I haven't bothered with all the soap/washing/etc. myself. I just tumble them in my vibrating tumbler with a little polish added to the media, and the cases seem to come out nice and clean. I decap and resize them after cleaning them. It hasn't seemed to affect my results at all.

Am I doing it wrong?
I get anal with getting the brass clean and shiny, tumbling is good enough for most shooting. I actually use the Allen pistol sock (which is poly) most of the time but it can get the brass hot enough to melt the gun sock. So far I have not found a quicker way to dry brass and I do not like to prolong the case prep any longer than necessary.
