You're right. It looks like the string is tied to the end of the spring guide that should go into a slot in the rear of the receiver, but here is tied further back to the stock. The other end is tied to the stock through the trigger guard. Without a channel to contain the spring as it compresses, I sure wouldn't put my face behind it and pull the trigger.

With nothing to anchor the recoil spring to, there would be nothing to stop the bolt's rearward travel.

Things could get rather exciting on the shooter's side if he decides to pull the trigger.
