Re: Baseball Memories
I was at Wrigley Field (yeah, I'm a Cubs fan) in, I guess it was 1988 or 1989, when I got hit in the head by a line drive foul hit by Mark Grace. My seat was right at the wall down the 3rd base line, but I was sitting on the wall looking up at the lights they were installing, thinking this was the end of an era. For those of you who don't know, Wrigley Field was the last major league park to have lights installed. Prior to then they always played day games.
My girlfriend at the time had just been sitting next to me but had moved to sit in her seat about 15 seconds before Grace hit the ball. If she hadn't moved it would have hit her, instead.
The ball hit my head and bounced into left field. The Cubs were playing the Cards that day, and the left fielder for the Cardinals picked up the ball, came up to me, and gave it to me. He said "Here, man. Anyone who gets hit in the head with it deserves to keep it." I know he was thinking "Anyone dumb enough not to move out of the way....."
The ball hit me square on my ear and gave me a decent gash behind the ear, but that was the only damage done. I spent most of the game in the first aid station in the stadium getting checked out by paramedics.
Yes, I still have the ball.
