Welcome to the Forum. 8 weeks is longer than it should take, but not unusually long. The hard part is when your status changes to "Mailed" about a week before it is actually mailed, and a week and a half before you finally receive it. That's the longest week and a half there is.

Re: "Waiting Room"

WOOOHOOO! My wife got her plastic!

She took the class on January 24th, sent in her paperwork on the 26th, and got her plastic today - 74 days after the day she mailed in her stuff. Now she's got to look at girlie ways of carrying a G19. Hey Crossfire, if you see this and have any suggestions, let me know!

Interestingly, her card has a new design which doesn't look anything like mine.

Re: "Waiting Room"

WOO HOO! I got my license in the mail today! The weird part is that I just checked online a minute ago, and again earlier this morning, and it still says that my application is being processed. But... I'm holding a license in my hand, mailed to me by "REGULATORY LICENSING SERVICE MSC 0245, TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY." I'm going to take it that I've been approved.

Here's the sequence:
  • 12/8 - I take CHL class.
  • 12/10 - 2 days later, I send in all paperwork to DPS.
  • 12/14 - 4 days later, USPS confirms DPS receipt of my paperwork.
  • 1/23 - 39 days later, DPS sends me a letter asking for further information, because I was born outside of the U.S. of an American father and French mother. (My father had a job with an American construction company building an airfield in Casablanca, and I just happened to be born while they were living there. We moved back to the U.S. before I was 6 months old.)
  • 1/28 - 44 days later, I receive their letter and telephone them. They say that they have not done anything to process my application at all because of the "missing" info. They also tell me that my 60-90 day waiting period begins when they receive the additional information. :mad5
  • 1/29 - 45 days later, I fax to DPS the following items:
    1. a copy of my birth certificate, signed by U.S. Consul in Casablanca;
    2. a copy of my U.S. passport;
    3. a copy of my Texas driver's license;
    4. a copy of my SS card;
    5. a copy of their letter to me; and
    6. a fax cover sheet. On the fax cover sheet I asked that, since they had sat on my application for 39 days before even letting me know that they wanted additional information, could they please expedite processing it, now that their information was complete. I phoned them to follow up, and was told again that the 60-90 days begins with the receipt of the additional information.
  • 2/23 - license received in mail.
Total elapsed time - 70 days. Maybe they read my fax cover sheet and took pity on my pathetic disarmed condition... ...naaaaah, probably not.

Anyway, time to go for a Wally Walk. :mrgreen:

This is just stupid. I don't care anymore. If I get it, I get it. If I don't, I don't. I'll just do whatever I have to do, whenever I have to do it, and DPS can go hang.

I have a rant brewing here, but I'm going to pass on it.

Re: "Waiting Room"

I've just telephoned DPS and spoke with someone there as to what the missing materials are. I was born overseas, at Casablanca in Morocco, of an American father and French mother. DPS wants me to fax them proof of those things. The odd thing is, I recall no instruction saying that I would need to provide those things at the time that I filled out and sent in all the other information back on 12/10. Had I known, I would have included those things with my other materials. Anyway, the letter was sent on Tuesday, so I'll likely receive it today. I have to fax them a copy of my birth certificate, proving that I was born an American, a copy of my American Passport, and some other document that she didn't specify but will be listed in the letter.

I told her that I mailed in my stuff on 12/10 and that I know they received it on 12/14, and asked if this was the one remaining thing to be covered before they issue the license. She said no, that they hadn't even started my background check yet since these items were "missing" from the materials I sent in. I then asked her how much longer it would then take, assuming I could get that stuff faxed off to them today, and she said about another 30 days.

I appreciate that they need to be thorough, but what I don't understand is how a month and half could go by with my application just sitting there unattended to before they deigned to let me know I needed to send in more stuff. Why didn't somebody let me know that additional paperwork was needed back in mid to late December?

Friggin' gummint! :mad5

Re: "Waiting Room"

Well I've been logging in every day and check my status, and today it has changed and reads "Application incomplete - missing information - detailed letter has been sent."

I can't imagine what it would be as I prepared my envelope for mailing in with my instructor. I have no materials left over that I did not enclose.

Then my PIN# must have come with the packet that DPS sent me before I took the class.

Ammo two, I've had my PIN# ever since I took the class. I don't remember if it came with the stuff that was mailed to me by the state before the class, or if the class directors gave it to me.

Re: "Waiting Room"

Thanks for the link. OK, I logged in, and this is what it said: "Packet Mailed to Applicant."

Well, I mailed them back the packet by certified mail on 12/10/07, and I know they received it, so does this mean that they don't track where it is in the process once they've received the stuff back from the applicant, or does this mean that they sent me my license?

Re: "Waiting Room"

On average, what is the average wait time these days?

Registered on DPS Website week of 11/26/07
I took the class on 12/08/07
Mailed my stuff back to DPS on 12/10/07

2 questions:

1. Realistically, approximately when can I expect my plastic to arrive (I've been told that it usually doesn't take the full 60-90 days anymore).
2. What is the DPS link for where you can monitor the application process? I have my PIN #, but I can't find the page where I log in to track it.

Thanks
