Legally, yes. Since you were in Louisiana at the time, the transfer to him would be simple -- just drive to the FFL and transfer it. The transfer to you would involve shipping to a Texas FFL and your picking it up there.

This is my understanding of the rules, which has been confirmed by others, and is how I gave two pistols to my brothers who live in Minnesota (I took the guns with me to MN and "deposited" them with a Minnesota FFL who held them for my brothers until they complied with the Minnesota requirements for purchasing a handgun (which was about half-way to completing the requirements for the Minnesota concealed permit, which they also did)).
