Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
Y'all talk among yourselves. I'm going to the range where I will shoot at targets. Not for the sake of shooting at targets, but to enhance my self defense skills in case I ever have to shoot to save my life, God forbid.

Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
Take any position that you want. Just be consistent. This website is the Concealed Handgun Forum. Maybe everyone here carries a gun so they can shoot cans in parking lots. I carry mine for self defense. Or maybe I'm the only honest person here.
Play all of the word games you want. I refuse to do so.

Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
No problem. But if you don't believe that handguns were designed to kill, stop carrying one for self defense. You can't have it both ways.

Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
I have never had a student come to me to learn to target shoot or to hunt. They learn to shoot targets because it is a viable way to build self defense skills with a gun. Every student I have ever had, without exception, has said at some point, in some way, that they want to learn to shoot because they want to know how to defend themselves. Although 99.9% of their ammo goes downrange and not at an attacker, the intent of putting that ammo downrange is that they become and remain proficient should they need to use those skills against an attacker.

Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
Partly true, Scott. The part you leave out is that a lamp is not intentionally designed so it can be used as a weapon. A gun is.

Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
Once again you make my point for me.
Just where else is there? The NRA has a virtual monopoly on this because for most people, there isn't anywhere else.

Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
Part of the basics is learning that a pistol is first and foremost a weapon designed to kill. That is why we reinforce safety rules so much. Separating firearms fundamentals from the primary purpose of the firearm creates a false reality.

Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
I took my NRA course several years ago so I already have that covered. I had a very good training counselor, but still I found that the two day course was mostly a waste of time for anyone who knew which end of the gun that the bullet comes out of. It was mostly a class for crew beginners, not for experienced people wanting to become instructors.
I also disagreed with the tremendous political correctness of the class where you were not allowed to call the gun a weapon, you could not use silhouette targets, you could not discuss self defense shooting or anything else which might make it appear that someone might actually use the gun to defend his life.

Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
What options? I am in my mid 60's and I am not going to become a cop and then a TCOLE instructor. I am not going back into the Army to be certified as a pistol instructor. For the vast majority of us, it's the NRA way or the highway. Good to learn about SAF classes. Need to find out if DPS accepts them.

Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
I just don't like being forced into one class with no options. I can understand DPS having just one class, because they are the ones giving out licenses. But as far as the outside classes go, almost all of us are forced into one type of class. Who thinks that the NRA is the only group that knows about guns?

Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
How do we go about finding out if the state accepts the SAF certification?

Re: Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
It just seems strange that the rules for an approved instructor course are so restrictive. Almost none of us who are LTC instructors are also TCOLE certified instructors, even if we are veteran LEO's. Almost none of us are military certified instructors, even if we shot for decades in the military. The vast, vast majority of LTC instructors in this state are stuck with NRA classes, which gives NRA one hell of a monopoly on this training, not to mention regular renewals.
There has to be a way to have some options for certification.
I just don't like being forced into a monopoly's "take it or leave it."

Non-NRA Approved Instructor Courses
I know that this was discussed several years ago when the state first started enforcing the "other nationally recognized handgun instructor certification" rule. I'm wondering if any new "approved" certifications have been added since then?
I know that NRA pistol instructor is approved, as well as TCOLE pistol instructor, but it seems that there would have to be some other classes that qualify. It looks like a good market to get into if there isn't something already available.
Some of us just don't like having to deal with NRA, and it would be nice to have alternatives.
