Correct, you are not required to show your CHL if not carrying. However, once the officer runs your drivers license it will show you have a CHL and the officer may come back and ask you about it and if you are carrying. Causes me to want to confirm: If I (or my wife) is stopped and we ARE NOT CARRYING, it seems we do not need to present our CHLs, correct? Though it's been said you should always get it out, to show the LEO you're "checked-out" already.
My suggestion is to always provide your CHL when asked for ID and let the officer know if or if you are not carrying if they ask about it.
