Read the title better, they are no longer posted and stated it was a mistake (in a post in the thread). So now you only have one reason not to eat there.DFWTT wrote:Admittedly after only reading the first 3 pages of this topic...The Rudy's in Arlington wasn't posted as of 3 months ago that I noticed. Getting me in that place is considered forcible entry anyway as the metroplex has many, many more BBQ outlets that are far superior. They will be without my funds for both reasons. apostate wrote:Thanks. I'm not a fan of ribs but enjoyed the pulled pork sammiches I had around RTP. It'll be interesting to see and taste the regional differences. Is the slaw in Memphis vinegar-based or mayo And do they serve hushpuppies? ? .
Yes, it's both and has mustard in it also. It is not a real wet slaw usually.
No hush puppies that I remember at Central, but they do have homemade potato chips and pork rinds. Don't think Jim Neely's has them either.
If you want hush puppies, there are LOTS of catfish restaurants along the Mississippi River too. Not real familiar with them as much since we could always get great catfish close to where we lived and didn't eat it when in Memphis.
A couple of words of caution about Memphis in general though, be careful where you go. Memphis has some really rough gang areas. I know an area with a really popular mall we frequented in in the 80's has gotten super bad. They actually tore down the mall due to gangs in the area. See this thread http://texaschlforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=49095" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Best to rely on the locals to tell you where to steer clear of.
EDIT TO ADD: Also make sure you read http://handgunlaw.us/states/tennessee.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Their signs are pretty liberal and about any sign with words other than just the gun buster sign alone will more than likely be valid. And, when the law was being changed to allow carry in restaurants that sold ANY amount of alcohol, there was a big drive by a restaurant owner in Memphis to get all of the other owners to post signs. My understanding is he was pretty successful and a many are posted. Not sure where, but just be on the lookout.

Re: Rudy's BBQ is now posted
Yep, I be a pork BBQ guy. Growing up my sandwiches were Memphis style pulled pork and dry-rubbed pork ribs with a vinegar based sauce to put on them. These days I make a mean smoked pork loin and do some great pulled pork shoulder/butt. I can make good ribs, but they are still not up to the standard that I really like from a couple of my favorite rib restaurants.Oldgringo wrote:Yep, that pulled pork is BBQ alright. Those folks over there had been cooking their BBQ for a hundred years before there was anything except tacos and frijoles to eat in Tejas. I suspect the BBQ that Keith B is so fond of in Memphis is also pork.Mike1951 wrote:i'm 60, and until we had cousins visit from NC a few years ago, I had never heard of pulled pork.Oldgringo wrote:Now that we've got that out of the way, if y'all have never enjoyed the pulled pork BBQ with the mustard/vinegar sauce that is inherent to the Carolina's and middle Tennessee, you ain't never had BBQ.
Let 'er go boys...
I'm still not sure that's really BBQ.
For beef, I like brisket if it is done right, but I have tasted too many that were like eating shoe leather because it was so tough and dry. Admittedly you can ruin anything, but think brisket is a little harder to do and get it done properly. And i am NOT a fan of beef ribs. Just not the flavor I like in my BBQ.

Re: Rudy's BBQ is now posted
Yep, Charles Vergo's is the place I recommended. And I will tell you that anywhere you go in the south (Tennesee, Mississippi, Alabama or Georgia) will more than likely know how to fry chicken. It's part of the culture of those areas!!PUCKER wrote:Not pulled pork....but FRIED CHICKEN, in Memphis,...the BEST fried chicken I've EVER had...I dreamt about it for the first week or two after I had it...seriously! And I thought about making a "quick trip" to Memphis JUST for this chicken! Uncle Lou's Fried Chicken (http://unclelousfriedchicken.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), give it a shot and get some sweet, spicy love! I had never had hot sauce and honey on chicken before...now every time I go to Babe's (or have fried chicken) I get a bowl of honey and mix the hot sauce up and dunk the chicken in it...YUMMMM!apostate wrote:I'm going to Memphis next month for Rangemaster's conference. OK, back on pork in Memphis, at least for the ribs, I like Charles Vergos' Rendezvous (http://www.hogsfly.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)...it looks like the kind of place you'd get the tar beat out of you while walking there (down an alley) but it's GREAT!

The original on Mockingbird was good before the fire, not sure about after as I haven't been there since. The other locations were not as good.Dragonfighter wrote:...Which burned. All of the others are just the sign, NOT the BBQPappaGun wrote: My vote is in for Sonny Bryan's
Same thing with Dickey's; there are some locations that are decent and some that are awful. I am friends with the owners of one of the stores, and their location is pretty good food. However, they tend to try and stick with the old style rubs and smoking. Unfortunately corporate is directing changes to all restaurants to try and cut costs, and if the location follows the guidelines it will ruin the food IMO.

I agree 03. Like I said, lots of good places for ribs. BB's definately has the atmosphere with good food and music. Beale is must visit if you want the Memphis blues experience.03Lightningrocks wrote:We love BB Kings for ribs and some great blues music!!! They have a dance floor too! The place is always packed! Re: Rudy's BBQ is now posted
For pulled pork either Central BBQ on Central Ave. or Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ on 3rd st. If you get a pulled pork sandwich, make sure it's Memphis style with the slaw on top.apostate wrote:I'm going to Memphis next month for Rangemaster's conference. Most places have pretty good ribs. I like Charlie Vergo's best, but Central or Neely's are good.

OK, I've changed my opinion of their BBQ from mediocre to decent.
Will continue to go there for their turkey, which I DO think is good.

Re: Rudy's BBQ is now posted
It's actually Red, Hot and Blue and no they don't have green chili stew, but do have decent Memphis-style BBQ samiches. At least decent for Texas. That locations is 75 & Walnut Hill. They also have a location in Plano at Preston and Plano Parkway, and Flower Mound, Irving, Fort Worth and North Richland Hills in the DFW area. Here is their website http://www.redhotandblue.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Dave2 wrote:Have you ever been to Red White and Blue? Dunno if they have green chili stew, but I recall liking their BBQ. There's one at the north-east corner of 75 & some street that's two or three exits south of 635. They are a chain, but I don't know where the others are located. And they're not in the texas3006 database.saltydog452 wrote:I am really, really. really going to miss their Green Chili Stew.
There is no shortage of acceptable Beef eateries, but losing access to real ( read Pork) BBQ and Green Chili Stew is a major loss to humanity.

I consider myself a BBQ coni-sewer as I grew up close to Memphis and along the Mississippi River where some of the best 'que in the country comes from. As for Rudy's I have never been a big fan. I think their BBQ is mediocre at best. Eat there every once-in-awhile, but if they are gonna post their locations 30.06, then my business goes elsewhere. My personal preference for BBQ around DFW is Hutchin's in McKinney.
