I have always thought of sweet tea as a southern tradition that has fairly recently made its way west to Texas. At least here, they still ask or default to unsweet tea. New Yorkers ridiculously call coffee with milk in it "regular" coffee. I found that I had to specify that I wanted it black if I wanted it without milk.
